When he finished writing the script, Khalid Mohammed wanted Ram Gopal Varma as the director of the film and had Urmila Matondkar in mind for the lead character of Fiza, which was finally portrayed by Karisma Kapoor. Hrithik Roshan's part was initially intended to be a supporting one. However, Mohammed knew that there would be huge expectations because of Roshan after his debut movie Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai became a box office success, so he extended his part. The movie also had the intention of becoming artistic. Mohammed, however, made the decision to make the movie commercial under pressure from the distributors.
