Given how very similar their faces are, Gaurav's impersonation of Aryan allowed him to win the local talent competition. He travels to Mumbai by train with the support of his parents in order to visit Aryan and give him the award he earned by portraying him.
When another star, Sid Kapoor, criticises Aryan in the media, an angry Gaurav beats him and forces him to apologise to Aryan while he records it. When Aryan views the footage on the internet, he has Gaurav arrested. Aryan warns Gaurav while he is being brutally tortured in jail, saying that he is not a fan of his and that he is the one who had Gaurav jailed. Aryan scoffs at the request from Gaurav for five minutes of his time and refuses to give the fan even five seconds.
Devastated, Gaurav comes home and destroys all of his Aryan memorabilia while threatening to exact revenge on Aryan for rejecting his support.
A year later, in London, Gaurav impersonates Aryan at Madame Tussauds and causes a mess on purpose, leading to Aryan's arrest. Released on bail, Aryan receives a call from Gaurav, who admits what he did and offers to stop harassing Aryan if he will apologise. Due to Aryan's refusal, Gaurav pretends to be part of the show's team.
In Dubrovnik, Croatia, Aryan is slated to play for a billionaire's daughter's wedding. Aryan understands that Gaurav is around when he receives a card that says, Say sorry, after giving a dancing performance. In the meantime, Gaurav harasses a female visitor while posing as Aryan.
The actual Aryan is scolded by the billionaire and forced to leave the gathering. Outside, Aryan sees Gaurav and pursues him, but Gaurav manages to get away. The media reports the molestation incident, which damages Aryan's reputation and causes boycotts of his shows.
Even Aryan's wife, Bela, and his kids are alarmed when Gaurav breaks into his Indian home and destroys his trophy collection. Aryan meets Neha while visiting Gaurav's parents. Aryan impersonates Gaurav with their assistance in the community talent show; to the upset of the crowd, he announces Gaurav's love for Neha and narrates Gaurav's actions.
This frustrates Gaurav, who pulls out a gun and fires at Aryan. After a brutal struggle, Aryan captures Gaurav after pursuing him. Gaurav is urged by Aryan to stop acting like him and start living normally. In response, Gaurav tells Aryan that he has damaged his life and tells him that he still hasn't said sorry. Gaurav smiles as he jumps from the roof.
Although Aryan's name has been cleared of all accusations, the incident still haunts him, and both in his mind and in the public's eyes, his name is associated with Gaurav.
Aryan visits his supporters on the roof on his following birthday. As he turns, he catches a haunting sight of Gaurav smiling up at him. This causes him to turn back to the crowd with increased respect and admiration.
Fan's original release date was late 2014 or early 2015. However, it was pushed back to August 14, 2015, when Khan got injured while filming Happy New Year. The release of Fan was further delayed until early 2016 by the difficult post-production visual effects work.
Following a number of setbacks, the movie was eventually released on April 15, 2016, across 3,500 theatres in India and approximately 1,100 screens in other countries. A total of about ₹1.05 billion (US$13 million) was spent on it, including a production expenditure of ₹850 million ($11 million) and publicity costs of ₹200 million ($2.5 million).
Before the film was released, the company sold the satellite rights to Sony Pictures Networks for about ₹450 million ($5.6 million).
The critics responded very well to the movie. Critics appreciated SRK's performance, visual effects, and action sequences while criticising the script's and editing's sloppiness. Bollywood Hungama's Taran Adarsh gave the movie 3.5 stars out of 5 and said, On the whole, Fan has a brilliant first half but loses track in the second hour, only to pick up again towards the pre-climax. The writing should've been tighter, but what works is the terrific act by SRK as the fan.
Based on 24 reviews with an average score of 6.5/10 on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 79% approval rating. Zee News gave the film 4.5 stars. The Times of India gave the movie a score of 4/5 and said, Fan is Shah Rukh Khan's triumph all the way. He pulls off a terrifically dramatic double act, altering his look, feel, and intensity, but as Gaurav, Shah Rukh makes you forget everything - except feeling scared.
