Starting off, the narrative features a headstrong and spoiled youngster, Gautam Mehra (Arjun Kapoor), renowned for his flamboyant dialogues and antics. A budding singer Aarvi Malhotra played by Tara Sutaria also enters the scene, and they share a tumultuous relationship. Amidst their chaos, a serial killer lurks in the city, claiming the lives of 15 girls, leaving behind no trace or evidence. This killer, deemed as the savior of heartbroken lovers, operates behind a jovial yellow smiley mask reminiscent of the Joker. Suspicion falls on Gautam as the masked killer; however, the story takes a twist just before the interval. It turns out that the man behind the murders is a taxi driver, Bhairav Purohit played by John Abrahm.
The plot thickens post-interval, taking multiple unexpected turns, which might perplex the audience. Alongside his ruthless killings, Bhairav is seen pining for the affection of Rasika played by Disha Patani, a notorious gold-digger. However, these twists in the plotline sometimes appear pointless, with some adding excitement and others merely creating confusion.
'Ek Villain Returns' is a romantic thriller directed by Mohit Suri, which successfully incorporates numerous twist-filled developments. However, the film falls short of expectations in several important aspects.
The storyline centers around Aarvi, a new singer who goes missing under mysterious circumstances, and the prime suspect, her on-and-off boyfriend Gautam Mehra. John Abraham enters the fray as a taxi driver Bhairav, whose sudden entry is linked with the unfolding series of murders. Despite the straightforward tale, the non-linear presentation lacks finesse, making the narrative jumpy and unevenly paced.
In terms of performances, it's a letdown. The characters, although realistically flawed, fail to make a connection with the audience due to their shallow building, and a sense of empathy is notably absent. Most roles, including those played by J D Chakravarty and Shaad Randhawa, are underdeveloped, considering their potential for enhancing the depth of the story. The inconsistent characterization feels like a missed opportunity in the area of performances.
The film's editing could have been tighter, especially in establishing a balance between the two halves of the plot. Uneven pacing and loose ends leave the audience longing for a more cohesive, gripping experience.
Despite the few unfavorable aspects, 'Ek Villain Returns' does manage to score in the music department. The reprised track, 'Galliyan,' brings a sense of tranquility amid the intense proceedings. However, the other tracks in the album seem to lack the same level of memorability.
One aspect of the film that patrons might find objectionable is the undertone of toxicity towards women. Although seemingly unintentional, it detracts from the film's core themes of love, loss, and rejection.
On the technical side, information about animation and graphics isn't provided in the text, therefore can't be commented upon.
Given its elements of mystery and romance amid a series of murders, 'Ek Villain Returns' would likely appeal to an audience seeking a story blend of crime, action, and love. However, audience members looking for strong character development and consistent storytelling may find it less appealing.
In conclusion, 'Ek Villain Returns' misses the mark when it comes to engaging performances, solid character development, and seamless storytelling. A tighter grip on narrative presentation, character construction, and the inclusion of empathetic elements could have significantly elevated the film.

Bhairav Purohit, portrayed by John Abrahm, is a taxi driver drawn into a complex sequence of events that link him to the disappearance of a rising singer, and a series of murders. His character plays a critical role in the narrative, unraveling the mystery, although further depth added to his character could have elevated his performance.
Arjun Kapoor plays Gautam Mehra, a rich and spoiled business heir, who gets caught up in the sudden disappearance of his on-and-off girlfriend, Aarvi. As the plot unfolds, Gautam finds himself wrestling with allegations and attempts to rescue his lady love. Although Gautam is at the center of the story, his character, too, lacks solid development.
The character of Aarvi Malhotra, a talented new singer and Gautam's love interest, provides a dramatic impetus to the film. Disappearing under mysterious circumstances, prospective investigations connect her to the circle of murders. Despite being pivotal, her character potentially needed more dimension to resonate better with the audience.
The roles of the supporting characters, such as those played by Shaad Randhawa and J D Chakravarty, could have been refined to provide stronger narrative support.
Though fraught with twists and turns, 'Ek Villain Returns' could have offered better character development, making the audience more emotionally invested in the storyline and characters. Despite its thrilling elements and a reprise of the pleasing 'Galliyan,' the film's narrative and performances could have benefitted from more attention to complexity and depth.
