The film was initially released in theatres but later became available on various OTT (Over-the-top) platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, among others. This has resulted in a wider reach and accessibility of movies, making them available to a larger audience.
The movie received four out of five stars from Meena Iyer of The Times of India, who called it "A suspense drama with a nail-biting finish." Iyer critiqued the Salgaonkar family's casting decisions but commended Devgn and Tabu's performances, saying, "Ajay, who is the victim in this scene, shines in his part as the protective father... Tabu is terrific as his predator." The movie received a three-and-a-half out of five-star rating from Rohit Vats of the Hindustan Times, who called it "Stunning, riveting, edge-of-the-seat, startling, and absorbing." Vats lauded the movie for being a suspense thriller success.

It was revealed in October 2014 that Saif Ali Khan would take up the lead role from Mohanlal, who had previously performed the part in the 2013 Malayalam precursor. In November 2014, it was revealed that Ajay Devgn would play the lead in the Hindi version of the 2013 film Drishyam, which would be made by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures in collaboration with Panorama Studios and directed by Nishikant Kamat.
There were also rumours that Akshay Kumar would play the lead. The idea was for Devgn to take on Mohanlal's 2013 movie character once more. Later, it was revealed that Shriya Saran would play the character's wife in place of Ajay Devgn's character's wife, Meera Deshmukh, who will be played by Tabu. The movie's main shooting was supposed to start in February 2015. Viacom 18 Motion Pictures' Chief Operating Officer, Ajit Andhare, said "A legendary movie, Drishyam captivates and intrigues you long after you've seen it. Its success at the box office in Telugu and Malayalam speaks for itself." Actor Ajay Devgn was in Canada to film snow scenes for his forthcoming movie Shivaay, but because of the mild snowfall, he had to reschedule that movie and fly back to India to start work on Drishyam.
Filmmaker Ekta Kapoor addressed a legal warning to the Malayalam filmmakers upon the news of the Hindi adaptation. The Devotion of Suspect X, written by Japanese author Keigo Higashino, was purchased by Ekta Kapoor for the screen, and according to her legal team, Drishyam is a movie adaptation of the book. Jeethu Joseph, the original Drishyam director and screenwriter, refuted claims that his movie is a parody or adaptation of the Japanese book and movie.
According to commentator Nandini Ramnath, Jeethu Joseph's accomplishment is in taking an intelligent notion and localising it so skillfully that the connections (to the Japanese novel) appear shaky unless carefully studied. This is similar to the plot of the inside movie. The director of Drishyam has an alibi that is almost as convincing as the one Ishigami fabricates for Yasuko and Misato. Drishyam is the ideal crime about a perfect crime.
Drishyam made roughly 463 million (US$5.8 million) at the conclusion of its first week. By the end of its run, it had earned a total of INR 91.97 crore ($12 million) at the Indian box office. The movie made 155 million (US$1.9 million) abroad in seven weeks, bringing its total worldwide earnings to 1.1 billion INR (US$14 million). A movie was released in China in 2022, earning $30k USD on day one and $4.05 million during its entire run, for a global total gross of $1.47 billion.
