Plot
With the exception of one or two loving relatives, the world around two oversized and talented women who live in diagonally opposite parts of the world one in the sleepy town of Meerut, and the other in the affluent city of New Delhi bullies them mercilessly. They come to the conclusion that they should collaborate in order to demonstrate their abilities to the outside world. They recruit two young and attractive men to help them with their endeavor, and the four of them start working on something in London that has the potential to earn them the admiration of people all over the world. They are successful in the long run.

Body shaming is an important topic and a societal problem that must be addressed. As with Saira's fashion documentary, writer Mudassar Aziz and director Satram Ramani select their subject and actors with care, but the film is a bit disorganized and tedious. The first half of the film is devoted to establishing the plot, with more unnecessary distractions than Sonakshi Sinha's lip piercing and stereotypical characters whose performances are disappointing. Even as the screenplay develops, the story does not. It remains a mishmash of happy coincidences that make everything appear too simple for the two main characters, whose struggle is meant to be genuine. A film crew arrives in a foreign country on an all-expenses-paid trip with no idea of what must be accomplished. The film's script is preachy and keeps reiterating the same point in different situations that are equally empty, leaving you with emotions that do not truly move you. This disconnects us further from the film's central premise, which is about body shaming and societal norms that prevent women from pursuing their dreams.
Huma Qureshi's sincere performance is the film's saving grace. The actress conveys Rajshri's struggle through a powerful and emotional performance and also undergoes a physical transformation to assume the Double XL role. Sonakshi Sinha's character, on the other hand, is written in a way that does not elicit much audience sympathy, and despite her best efforts, the actress fails to make the desired impression. However, the screenplay is at its best when the two leading ladies are interacting with one another. The performance of Zaheer Iqbal as the flamboyant and flirtatious Zorawar Rehmani, who insists on being called Zo, Za, or Zoo, is more irritating than endearing. As Srikanth, debutante Mahat Raghavendra demonstrates promise. And it's heartening to finally see veteran character actress Shubha Khote on the big screen. As Rajshri's paranoid and constantly angry mother, Alka Kaushal does an excellent job of capturing a middle-aged rural woman's insecurities and apprehensions. The soundtrack of the film is easily forgettable.
As a concept, Double XL is novel and timely. It takes a lot of courage on the part of the creators and actors to weave a narrative around the subject. Nevertheless, mediocre writing and execution diminish the film's original potential.
