"Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" is a classic Bollywood romance movie that tells the story of Raj and Simran, two young Indians living in London. While on a trip through Europe, they fall in love but their different family traditions threaten to keep them apart. Raj tries to win over Simran's traditional father, who wants her to marry a family friend back in India. Along the way, Raj and Simran face numerous obstacles and misunderstandings, but ultimately they realize their love is worth fighting for. The movie is filled with beautiful scenery, iconic songs, and heartwarming moments that have made it a beloved classic among Bollywood fans worldwide.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge premiered on October 20, 1995, to worldwide acclaim. For the first week, every show in every theatre in Mumbai—except one—was completely sold out. The film was well-liked by both local Indians and non-resident Indians. The first showing at San Francisco's 720-seat Naz theatre drew 1,000 people, forcing the theater's staff to run another late that night. The film was shown for over a year in the United Kingdom. The Maratha Mandir cinema hall in Mumbai had been open for 1251 weeks as of March 16, 2020. (24 years).
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge received a lot of positive feedback. Aditya Chopra was described as "a young master arriving" in an initial review by weekly magazine Screen. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge performs the rarely achieved feat of stretching a predictable plot over three hours and making every minute enjoyable, according to Tom Vick, reviewing the film for Allmovie. When the film toured the United States as part of the Cinema India showcase in 2004, "It's a flawed, contradictory movie—aggressive and tender, stiff and graceful, clichéd and fresh, sophisticated and naive, traditional and modern," Charles Taylor wrote in his Salon review. It's also, in my opinion, a classic." In 2005, Raja Sen wrote a thoughtful review for Rediff.com, calling the film one of the best Hindi films made in the previous 20 years. "Shah Rukh Khan gives a fantastic performance, redefining the Lover for the 1990s with great panache," he says, and Kajol is a "real-as-life actress bringing warmth and credulity" to her role.

In the beginning, Raj is portrayed as a carefree individual who does not take life too seriously. He is not interested in getting married and is happy living life on his own terms. However, when he meets Simran (Kajol), he is smitten with her and soon realizes that he has fallen in love with her. Raj's character is a perfect example of a hero who knows what he wants and is willing to go to great lengths to get it. Raj's character is one of the main reasons why "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" is such a beloved movie, and why it has become a classic of Hindi cinema.
Simran's character is initially portrayed as timid and obedient, following the rules set by her family without question. However, as the story progresses, she begins to show her rebellious side, expressing her desires to travel and see the world, and ultimately falling in love with Raj, played by Shah Rukh Khan. Simran's journey is one of self-discovery, as she learns to stand up for herself and fight for what she wants. She defies her family's expectations and traditions, risking their disapproval to pursue her own happiness. Kajol portrays Simran's character with great depth and emotion, making her relatable and endearing to the audience. Her character arc is one of the reasons why Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge has become a timeless classic in Indian cinema.
Chaudhary Baldev Singh is a prominent character in the Bollywood movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. He is the father of Simran, the female protagonist of the movie. Baldev is a traditional, conservative, and strict patriarch who values his family's reputation and tradition above everything else. However, Baldev's character undergoes a transformation throughout the movie. He gradually realizes that his daughter's happiness is more important than his family's reputation. He eventually accepts Raj, a non-traditional groom, as his son-in-law and overcomes his prejudices against other castes. Overall, Baldev's character portrays the conflict between tradition and modernity, and his transformation highlights the importance of accepting change and evolving with the times.
Lajjo Singh, played by Farida Jalal, is a significant character in the movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. She is the mother of Simran, the female protagonist of the story, and is portrayed as a traditional and conservative woman who adheres strictly to Indian culture and values. Throughout the movie, Lajjo Singh remains an unwavering source of support for her daughters, especially Simran, whom she deeply loves and wants to see happy. She often puts her own desires aside to ensure that her daughters' dreams are fulfilled.
Dharamvir Malhotra, the father of Raj in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, is a traditional and principled man who values family and culture above all else. He is a proud and stern patriarch who has high expectations of his son and wants him to follow in his footsteps by taking over the family business.

Aditya had intended for the film to be about a relationship between an Indian and an American. He wanted Tom Cruise to play Raj, but Yash refused because he did not want to use a foreign star. They decided to make their characters non-resident Indians (NRIs). Aditya approached Shah Rukh Khan about playing Raj. Kajol was the first choice for the role of Simran, and she quickly agreed. She and Shah Rukh previously collaborated on the successful films Baazigar (1993) and Karan Arjun (1995). Kajol stated that her character was difficult to relate to, whereas Shah Rukh stated that Raj's personality was very similar to his own.
Between September 1994 and August 1995, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was shot on a 5-, 10-, and 20-day schedule. The first sequence was shot in Switzerland for the song "Ho Gaya Hai Tujhko" with Kajol and Shah Rukh. Following the completion of filming, Aditya decided to create a Hollywood-style documentary of the film-making process, which had never been done before in India. Karan Johar and Uday were given command because they had been documenting some of the processes. Doordarshan aired the 30-minute special Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, The Making on October 18, two days before the film's release.
In its first month of release, the film grossed over 800 million (US$24.67 million). The film's initial Hindi run earned 1.13 billion rupees (approximately US$35,000,000 in 1995) in India and approximately 200 million rupees (approximately US$6,200,000 in 1995) overseas; it became the highest-grossing Indian film of the year, and the second-highest-grossing film of the 1990s, behind Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! It was the second Indian film to earn more than $1 billion worldwide, and one of the highest-earning Bollywood films of all time. As of 1996, the film had grossed a total of 2 billion (60 million) dollars worldwide. Since its release, the film had generated over $60 million in revenue for the Maratha Mandir as of 2009. Later, that theatre ran one matinée show per day at reduced ticket prices, with an average occupancy of about 50%.

Kirron Kher, wife of famous actor Anupam Kher, suggested the title for this film.
On December 14, 2014, the film is still in theatres and has been for 1000 weeks in 19 years.
Aditya Chopra had a lot of trouble filming the scene in which Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) makes a joke about the previous night with Simran (Kajol). The reason for this was that whenever Shah Rukh Khan opened his shirt, Kajol couldn't stop laughing. Kajol drew the images of the lips on the chest.
Aamir Khan stopped attending the Filmfare Awards after SRK won Best Actor for his role in this film, believing he should have won for Rangeela.
Uday Chopra purchased SRK's famous leather jacket for $400 from a Harley-Davidson store in Bakersfield, California.
The film was released to commemorate Yash Raj Films' 25th anniversary.
Raj, played by Shah Rukh Khan, was named after Raj Kapoor by Aditya Chopra.
In conclusion, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is a timeless classic that has captured the hearts of audiences around the world. It tells the heartwarming story of two young people from different cultural backgrounds who fall in love and strive to overcome various obstacles to be together. The film's themes of family, tradition, and love are universal and resonate with people of all ages and cultures.
