Behind the Scenes
Amitabh Bachchan's character is based on Karna, while Shashi Kapoor is based on Yudhisthira from the Mahabharata. Dilip Kumar's furious performance as Gunga in Gunga Jumna inspired Amitabh’s angry young man portrayal as Vijay in the film, which Bachchan sharpened and reworked in a contemporary urban setting reflecting the evolving socio-political climate of 1970s India.
Bachchan had some input on Chopra's direction in select situations, like as the father's funeral scene, when Bachchan recommends using his left hand to burn the pyre and show off the tattoo "Mera baap chor hai". Because Bachchan was working on Ramesh Sippy's Sholay at the same time, most of the film was shot at night.
In a fight scene in the movie, Bachchan does some martial arts moves that were inspired by Hong Kong martial arts movies.
Box Office Collection
The movie earned a total of ₹75 million (about $9 million) from theatres in India. Deewaar was a commercial and critical success upon its release, ranking as the fourth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 1975. Critics praised the story, dialogue, screenplay, and performances of the cast, notably those of Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, and Nirupa Roy.
