Jamnalal Tripathi, a previous minister of industry, passed away in the 1980s, leaving a vacancy in the Central Government. The former chief minister of Maharashtra and current political adviser to the party in power in the federal government, Dadasaheb, has been waiting for just such a chance. Two of Dadasaheb's daughters are political spouses. Before things get going, the younger son-in-law Daulat Rao Deshmane, a devout minister and prospective candidate for the position of Minister of Industry, decides to travel to a pilgrimage with his wife Dolly and his father-in-law. When a picture of Daulat with a woman appears on the front page of a newspaper during the journey, exposing him to an adulterous relationship, there is a stir in central political circles.
The incident occurred a few months ago when Nanasaheb Jondhale, a dishonest MLA and Dadasaheb's older son-in-law, forced Daulat to walk to the door of a notorious whore against his will. He attempted to flee but could hear Ghungroo and Dholki's voices. He is mesmerised by Chandramukhi's attractiveness from the moment their eyes meet out of sheer curiosity. He skips a conference the following day and flies to meet Chandramukhi with Batasharao, a former Songadya, instead (clown). He then started seeing Chandramukhi regularly, and they eventually fell in love.
Daulat questions Chandramukhi about her past life when they are having a romantic evening in a neighbourhood close to the lake. She reveals to him that she is Shahir Umajirao Junnarkar's daughter, a well-known theatre performer. One day, while doing a concert, her father passes out on stage due to a heart attack. Therefore, she continued the troupe with the help of her mother, and it quickly rose to fame. Everything was going smoothly until the theatre caught fire one day, turning her entire world upside down. Afterwards, she found out that they had racked up a debt of Rs 2.5 lakh. By threatening to take Chandramukhi with him, the lender uses blackmail to coerce her mother.
At that point, Lalan finds a solution to the money issue and takes Chandramukhi to her brothel, where she is coerced into becoming a prostitute against her will. Chandramukhi rejects this and stays out of the prostitution business. Lalan had attempted to perform the ceremony of Chirabharni, but it had been practised in the most heinous obscurity (deflowering). She was brutally raped on that particular day, and she kept it a secret from everyone. Yet after confronting Daulat about it that evening, their relationship grew stronger.
Dolly becomes suspicious of her husband after discovering a ghungroo in her bedroom one lovely day and begs him to stop before things worsen. Daulat keeps Chandramukhi at Panvel's farmhouse despite being forewarned in order to keep their connection a secret. During a Diwali celebration, Dolly learns about this and makes her way to the farmhouse to embarrass Chandramukhi and ask her to leave. Throughout the procedure, Dolly became ill, and it was later found that she had a hole in her heart. Daulat, however, was unable to control his emotions or his love for Chandramukhi.
The narrative then shifts to the present, as Nanasaheb publishes the front-page photograph of Daulat and Chandramukhi. Daulat is shocked to see Bhattasharao at a meeting with the prime minister in Delhi. Bhattasharao claims to have brought Chandramukhi after receiving a message from Daulat. As Chandramukhi refuses to admit that Daulat sexually assaulted her, Nanasaheb threatens to kill her mother. On the other side, Nanasaheb enters Chandramukhi's hotel room and forces her to confess. Dadasaheb organised a meeting to admit that Dolly was in the photo with Daulat and that Daulat said he had never seen Chandramukhi after realising that someone was purposefully hurting his son-in-law.
Chandramukhi enters the room to everyone's surprise and admits that she was raped by Nanasaheb, not Daulat, and that she has never met Daulat. She finished by expressing gratitude to the journalists for their admiration and asking them to continue to make an effort to learn more about the life of the Tamasha artists.
In the conclusion of the story, Daulat and Chandramukhi cross paths. She gives him her word that they won't run into one other again, but she keeps a secret: she is pregnant.
The audience had great expectations for the movie because it was one of the most eagerly awaited Marathi movies of the year. The movie was revealed in January 2020, and on April 13, 2021, an official teaser for the movie was released. The actress's face was hidden in the initial glance of the poster, which featured a Lavani Dancer dressed in political garb. The first release date for Chandramukhi was set for November 5, 2021, which also happened to be Diwali. It was moved to April 29, 2022 because the COVID-19 epidemic caused a delay in production.
The film's creators ran a massive promotion for Chandramukhi. Leaks were prevented during production with the proper precautions. On February 10, 2022, the second teaser was made available. Instead of revealing the individuals, the teaser left the viewers wondering who the actors were hiding behind. The tagline used to advertise the movie was 'तो ध्येय धुरंधर राजकारणी… ती तमाशातली शुक्राची चांदणी… लाल दिवा आणि घुंगरांच्या गुंतावळीची… राजकीय रशिली प्रेमकहाणी…'
Adinath Kothare's identity as Daulat Deshmane was revealed in a 48-second teaser on March 16, 2022. The Royal Opera House staged a star-studded celebration for the first-ever Marathi film event that will take place at this Mumbai landmark theatre on March 22, 2022. The 35-foot-tall cutout of Amruta Khanvilkar dressed as Chandra was unveiled by the film's creators, and she even sang Lavani on one of the song's lyrics to announce Chandra. After that, the songs 'Chandra,' 'To Chand Rati,' and 'Bai Ga' were released, which greatly increased the film's buzz. Following that, teasers were used to introduce the cast, which included Samir Choughule as Battasha, Mohan Agashe as Dadasaheb Saswadkar, and Rajendra Shisatkar as Nana Jondhale. Eight days before the movie's premiere, the nearly three-minute long official trailer was made public.
The audience responded favourably to the caravan. Together with the Marathi celebrities, the trailer received acclaim from worldwide superstar Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Bollywood dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit. Mrunmayee Deshpande's inclusion in the cast was not made public. The trailer was supposed to be the announcement, but instead they released a poster showing her as Damayanti Daulatrao Deshmane. Three days before the movie's opening, Prajakta Mali and Khanvilkar's 'Sawal Jawab' song was made public.
For the first time in the history of the Marathi Film Industry, the Chandramukhi movie poster flashed on the SpiceJet aircraft. Only one day before the movie's premiere, the ceremony was held at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Khanvilkar served as the first Marathi actor to appear on the cover of Filmfare Magazine as part of promotion. Beginning on June 20, 2022, the movie was made available digitally on Amazon Prime Video.
The Times of India's Mihir Bhanage scored Chandramukhi three out of five stars, writing, 'Short version: Chandramukhi is a watchable film. Even greater editing would have made it possible. A special mention goes to Ajay-music, Atul's which gives the songs the necessary rustic touch and improves the experience '.
Koimoi's Shubham Kulkarni describes it as a 'Mixed Bag Of A Film.' He commended Khanvilkar's diligence, her expressive gaze, and Ajay-music. Atul's Ultimately, he gave the film a 3 out of 5 star rating, saying, 'She calls him her Krishna, he calls her Goddess of her own temple, I wish the same poetry kept alive throughout making the hurting heartbeat sharper.'
According to Suyog Jore of Cinestaan, Chandramukhi is 'not just the love tale of two odd characters, but it is also a tribute to Maharashtra's traditional and rich culture of lavani and poetry,' giving it a rating of 2 out of 4 stars. Khanvilkar's performance was acclaimed, and he added, 'Khanvilkar owns the film. Simply put, the actress has immersed herself in the role. Khanvilkar would have made a masterful performance if the filmmakers had given Chandramukhi a little more nuance.'

Chandramukhi, a novel by Vishwas Patil, served as the inspiration for the film's plot. Because of his passion for folk artists and the assumption that Chandramukhi would be his first film as a filmmaker, actor-director Prasad Oak first read the book in 2004. For more than a decade, he tried to buy the rights to the story, but the author, Vishwas Patil, wasn't ready. While this was happening, Oak went on to helm the 2017 film Kachcha Limboo and the 2018 film Hirkani (2019).
Patil agreed to the concept around 2019, at which point the film's production got underway. To produce the movie under the auspices of Planet Marathi, Golden Ratio Productions, Flying Dragon Entertainment, and Creative Vibe, producers Khanvilkar and Oak approached producers Akshay Bardapurkar, Piyush Singh, Abhayanand Singh, and Saurabh Gupta. In addition to Chinmay Mandlekar writing the screenplay and narrative, Oak also hired Ajay-Atul for the music. Mandlekar developed the script from the novel in seven to eight months.
The main shooting started on November 8, 2020. At Byculla's Masina Hospital, the mahurat shot was captured on camera. The second schedule ran from December 7, 2020, to December 18, 2020. Bhor, Saswad, Satara, and Mumbai, especially Film City, served as the various shooting locations. Within 45 days, the filming was done. The movie's post-production was completed at the end of February 2021.
