Plot

Anek follows Joshua's journey through the violent northeast, as he tries to negotiate a truce with the leader of the most militant organisation, Tiger Sangha. Joshua makes friends with Aido, one of the member's daughters, in an effort to join a separatist organisation. As a fierce boxer who has experienced racism on numerous occasions, Aido nevertheless strives to win a gold medal for India and, in doing so, hopes to gain complete recognition as an Indian.

Release

Anek was released in theatres around the world on May 27, 2022, with mainly divided excellent reviews from critics. It got an appreciation for its ideas and actions, but it also drew criticism for its complicated narrative. Later on the 26th of June,  2022, the movie was released on Netflix. 

Reviews

The Times of India critic gave the movie a score of 4/5 and said, "Anek, through its runtime, draws subtle parallels between the northeast and other parts of the country, in particular Jammu and Kashmir." The Print's Tina Das gave the movie a rating of four stars and said, "Anek manages to showcase the complex layers of the insurgency in the Northeast, and it does that well."

The Guardian's Phuong Le gave the movie a score of four out of five stars and commented, "Anek is a rare commercial film that spotlights Northeastern Indian stories and goes out of its way to refuse to condemn guerrilla fighters as terrorists." Filmfare's Devesh Sharma gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and said, "The political message packs a punch; its power is somewhat diminished by the execution and the writing, which is rusty in places." News 18's Navneet Vyasan gave the movie three out of five stars and stated, "If it wasn't for its cast, Anubhav Sinha's directorial Anek would've been a test of your patience. Thankfully, it isn't.”
