"Ae Dil Hai Mushkil" is a Bollywood romantic drama film that follows the story of Ayan (played by Ranbir Kapoor), an aspiring singer, who falls in love with his friend Alizeh (played by Anushka Sharma). However, Alizeh only sees Ayan as a friend and is still in love with her ex-boyfriend, Ali (played by Fawad Khan). As Ayan tries to win Alizeh's love, he also meets Saba (played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a poetess who falls in love with him. The film explores themes of unrequited love, heartbreak, and the complexities of modern relationships. Ultimately, Ayan learns to accept that sometimes love cannot be forced and that it is okay to let go.
Following nationwide protests surrounding the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 18 September 2016, and the decision by the Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India to prohibit the release of films starring Pakistani actors in four states - Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Goa - on 8 October 2016, the Indian political party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), declared that they would not allow the film's release. On October 20, 2016, Mukesh Bhatt stated that his conversation with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh was significant, and that the film would be screened without violence throughout the country. He did, however, promise not to make any more films with Pakistani actors.
When it was released, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics, with praise for its direction, music, cinematography, and cast performances, with special praise directed towards Sharma, Kapoor, and Rai's performances; however, its story and screenplay received criticism.
Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 53% rating based on 14 critic reviews, with a 5.4/10 average rating. The film received a normalised rating of 40 out of 100 on Metacritic, indicating "mixed or average reviews" from four critics. Bollywood Hungama gave 4/5 ratings and commented, "a contemporary and a progressive take on relationships from the master storyteller Karan Johar".

Ayan is a complex character, struggling to navigate his romantic feelings for Alizeh and the pain of being rejected by her. He is emotional, and sensitive, and often wears his heart on his sleeve. Ayan is also deeply affected by the loss of his mother and seeks solace in his music and friendship with Alizeh. Throughout the film, Ayan shows great growth and maturity as he comes to terms with his unrequited love for Alizeh and learns to accept her as a friend. He also learns the importance of cherishing the people in his life, even if they don't love him back in the same way.
Alizeh Khan, played by Anushka Sharma in the movie Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, is a complex and layered character. She is portrayed as a free-spirited, independent woman who values her independence and is not afraid to speak her mind. Alizeh is confident and expressive, with a strong sense of self. She is emotionally intelligent and empathetic toward others, and this quality draws Ayan (played by Ranbir Kapoor) toward her. Despite being aware of Ayan's feelings for her, Alizeh makes it clear that she sees him only as a friend.
Saba Taliyar Khan is a complex and enigmatic character in the Bollywood film "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil." She is played by actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and is introduced as a successful poet and a divorced woman who is emotionally guarded. Saba is portrayed as a confident and independent woman who is unapologetic about her desires and doesn't shy away from pursuing them. She is a free-spirited artist who enjoys the finer things in life and isn't afraid to indulge in them. She is also shown to be very passionate about her art and has a deep connection with her poetry.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil premiered in November 2014. At the time, writer-director Karan Johar, who had previously directed Student of the Year (2012), stated that he had been developing a story for the past year and a half that he needed to work on for several months. However, while in New York, the screenplay for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (named after a song from the 1956 film C.I.D., starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman) came to him, and he wrote it in 30 days. When he returned to India, he spoke with the three lead actors, who all agreed right away. Johar stated that he was inspired to cast Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the film after meeting them as co-stars in Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet (2015), Johar's directorial debut.
Citing the film's casting of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, the MNS warned theatre owners across the country not to screen it, threatening them with vandalism.
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was made on a budget of more than 50 crore, which included marketing and distribution costs. The film had already recouped 75 crore ($11.2 million) from music, satellite, and digital rights prior to its release, so it only needed to recoup 25 crore ($3.7 million) from the domestic box office. On its opening weekend, the film earned 90.84 crore ($13.6 million) worldwide, with ComScore reporting an estimated $12.8 million from 14 markets. The film grossed 160.69 crore in India and 237.56 crore worldwide by the end of its theatrical run, making it a box office blockbuster.

'Ae Dil' was the previous title of the film. But after hearing the film's title track, composed by Pritam, Karan was so taken with it that he changed the title to Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
Ranbir imitated actor Jeetendra's famous dance steps from his film Tohfa for a scene in the film (1984). And Karan was the one who taught him the moves.
Ranbir revealed that if he felt a particular scene or shot in the film wasn't working out, Karan would make changes or come up with an alternative right away.
The film is partially based on Doosra Aadmi (1977), and many people compared the ending to The Fault in Our Stars (2014).
In the film, actor Saif Ali Khan was supposed to play Tahir Taliyar Khan. Due to his injury, Shah Rukh Khan took his place in the film.
There was more Fawad and Aishwarya in the film than what was eventually included. Last year, five to six deleted scenes from the film starring the stars were leaked online.
After 14 years, Aishwarya and SRK were reunited in the film. They last collaborated on Devdas (2002). This was their sixth collaboration.
In conclusion, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a poignant tale of unrequited love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. The film beautifully captures the complexities of modern-day relationships and the emotional turmoil that comes with them. The performances by the lead cast are exceptional, with Ranbir Kapoor delivering one of his finest performances. The music by Pritam adds to the film's emotional depth and elevates the viewing experience. Ultimately, the film's message is that love is not always easy, but it is worth taking a chance on, even if it means facing heartbreak.
