He had a dream start to his international career when in his first ODI appearance in June 2017 he claimed a hat-trick and removed Zimbabwe's tail becoming only the third debutant and the first leg-spinner in history to do so. At the age of 19 he accomplished all that in just his third over of international cricket.

He began playing in the younger age groups predominantly as a leg-spinner and did well at the 2016 Youth World Cup. However his hitting eventually overcame and surpassed his bowling as he racked up remarkable numbers for Colombo Cricket Club throughout the two seasons of the Premier League competition. The fact that the form translated into List A success and he finished the 2016–17 season with the Most Promising Player title further impressed the national selectors. He continued his success into the 2018 campaign becoming Colombo Cricket Club's top run-scorer with 765 runs in nine Premier League games.
