Vivekanandan professionally known as Vivek was a Tamil cinema actor comedian television personality playback singer and social activist. He was introduced in films by director K. Balachander and won three Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian in Tamil for his performances in Run (2002) Saamy (2003) and Perazhagan (2004) as well as five Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Comedian for his performances in Unnaruge Naan Irundhal (1999) Run (2002) Parthiban Kanavu (2003) Anniyan (2005) and Sivaji (2005).
His comic technique included one-liners and word plays with social and political satire garnering him the nickname Chinna Kalaivanar from critics who compared him to N. S. Krishnan. He died on April 17 2021 as a result of a heart arrest at the age of 59.
Vivek received the Padma Shri award from the Government of India in 2009 for his contribution to the arts. Vivek was awarded an honorary doctorate by Sathyabama University for his contributions to society through movies. As a television personality Vivek hosted several events and interviewed media figures including A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. In 2010 Vivek established the Green Kalam campaign inspired by Kalam's environmental activism with the goal of planting one billion trees across Tamil Nadu.

Rum is a 2017 horror comedy thriller film written and directed by Sai Bharath in the Tamil language. Anirudh Ravichander composed the film's score and soundtrack which stars Hrishikesh Vivek Narain Sanchita Shetty and Miya. The film went into production in early 2016 and was released on February 17 2017.
The film begins with Shiva and his friends visiting a bungalow. In the haunted guesthouse they encounter strange occurrences. The makers disclosed that the term Rum is an old Tamil word that means verdict rather than drink as was popularly assumed.
During the audio launch of his film Bigil on Sunday Vivek made a remark on the lyric Nenjil Kudiyirukkum which is a song from Sivaji-Irumbu Vyjyanthimala's Thirai. Vivek intensified his contentious statement by claiming that the line was not well-known until actor Vijay used it in his speech. His remark sparked outrage on social media as a video of his speech went viral and he was also chastised by admirers of the late great actor Sivaji Ganesan.

In 2010 Vivek founded Green Kalam a movement inspired by former Indian President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to plant trees across India. Over 3 300 000 seedlings had been planted as of his death. Vivek along with actresses Suriya Jyothika and Karthi was named an ambassador for the Plastic Pollution Free Tamil Nadu campaign in 2018 by the state government led by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
Vivek reported breathlessness and chest trouble on April 16 2021 and was brought to a SIMS Hospital in Chennai after falling unconscious at home. Doctors determined that he was critically ill and discovered that he had a thrombus with a 100% blockage in the left anterior descending artery resulting in congestive heart failure. He died in the hospital on April 17 2021 at the age of 59 following an angioplasty.
He was accorded a state funeral in front of a large throng at his home in Virugambakkam Chennai. Vivek received Bharat Biotech's Covaxin the day before the attack and advocated for COVID-19 immunization. The National Human Rights Commission determined that there was no link between the vaccine and his heart attack and that it was instead caused by hypertension. Vivek's funeral was held with full state honours in Chennai.
