Biography

Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is an Indian musician. He is famous for playing the Mohan veena, a fusion instrument that is a form of slide guitar.

Born on July 27, 1950 in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt was always surrounded by music. His father, Mohan Bhatt was a passionate musician who taught his son all of the different ragas and melodies in detail. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt as well as his brother, Shashi Mohan Bhatt, were disciples to the legendary sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.

In 1967 he came across a Spanish guitar which was forgotten in his father’s music school by a German student. Out of curiosity, he took this guitar and remodeled it. After some experimentation, he was able to make it sound like an Indian classical instrument. This marked the birth of the Mohan veena, which would become Vishwa Mohan Bhatt’s trademark instrument.

His innovative approach to music has made him one of the few Indians to win a Grammy Award.
