Biography

Tamim Iqbal Khan better known by his stage name Tamim Iqbal plays cricket for Bangladesh. He is the nephew of the current top selector for the Bangladesh Cricket Board and former captain of Bangladesh Akram Khan. One of the best Bangladeshi cricketers of all time Tamim Iqbal is renowned for his aggressive batting approach in the top order.

Tamim participated in his first Test the following year after making his ODI debut in 2007. Against Ireland he scored his first century. At Lord's Stadium he is the only Bangladeshi batsman to reach a century against the English cricket team. Between December 2010 and September 2011 he was the national team's vice-captain. 

In March 2021 Tamim became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to reach 50 ODI half-centuries. According to statistics he has scored the most runs in a Bangladeshi batsman's international career with more than 14 000 runs. With 25 centuries across all formats of cricket Tamim is also Bangladesh's top century-maker in international games.

In the port city of Chittagong Tamim was born to Iqbal Khan and Nusrat Iqbal Khan. His paternal Khan family which hails from Bihar is well-known in the town. His maternal family belongs to Salempur in Uttar Pradesh. Tamim is the brother of Nafees Iqbal and the nephew of Akram Khan who both played Test cricket for Bangladesh.

Iqbal Tamim's father used to organize local cricket competitions to assist his boys in practicing and improving their game. In an interview his brother Nafees a former cricketer for the national team stated: Tamim possessed more excellent skill. In June 2013 Tamim wed Ayesha Siddiqa in a lavish ceremony conducted in Chittagong.

Khaleda Zia a former prime minister was also present. On February 28 2016 he gave birth to a boy named Arham. On November 19 2019 he welcomed Alishba as his first child.

Tamim sends Ayesha a love letter when she is only 15 years old. Ayesha however turned down the offer at the time. But after some time had passed she decided to date Tamim. Before they got married Ayesha Tamim's wife did not enjoy cricket. She formerly adored football. Before they were married they had been dating each other for more than eight years.

In Malaysia Tamim's wife completed her education. When she was 18 years old she and her older sister left Bangladesh. When she left the country a few days later her lover Tamim had been selected for the Bangladesh national cricket team. Iqbal and his wife Ayesha reportedly came under acid assault in London in 2017.

Ayesha Siddiqa and Tamim Iqbal are married at the moment. In a lavish ceremony in Chittagong in June 2013 the pair exchanged vows. Khaleda Zia a former prime minister also attended the occasion.

Domestic and T20 Franchise Career

Tamim has scored around 7 000 T20 runs in all T20 games with an average of 32+. 

County Cricket

Shakib Al Hasan was the first Bangladeshi to play county cricket in England in 2011 and Tamim became the second when he signed with Nottinghamshire in June of the same year. David Hussey an Australian batsman was called up to the national team and needed a temporary replacement so he was hired. Tamim played in five matches during his stint recording 104 runs the highest of which was 47. 

Tamim's batting was regarded as solid though unspectacular by the Nottingham Post and he stated of his performance It could have been better but it wasn't too bad. Despite the fact that he was playing abroad Tamim faced pressure from the Bangladeshi media to perform particularly when Nottinghamshire faced Worcestershire which had Shakib Al Hasan on the field. His exploits occasionally made the front pages. Tamim was chosen to represent Essex in the NatWest T20 Blast but he withdrew due to personal issues.

Srilanka Premier League

Tamim was signed by Wayamba United for the 2012 Sri Lanka Premier League. Tamim scored 190 runs in six innings at a 38.00 average and one half-century (93* off 61).

Bangladesh Premier League

In the 2012 Bangladesh Premier League Tamim Iqbal represented the Chittagong Kings as their most iconic player. He was only able to play two innings while scoring eight runs.

In the second season of the BPL he captained Duronto Rajshahi. He had 3 fifties and scored 244 runs in 9 innings. Tamim represented the Chittagong Vikings in the 2015 Bangladesh Premier League leading his side with the most runs scored (298 in 9 innings at an average of 37.25 with 3 fifty-sixes).

In the 2016 Bangladesh Premier League Tamim led his side in scoring once more accumulating 476 runs in 13 innings at an average of 43.27 with six fifties. Tamim participated in the 2017 Bangladesh Premier League with the Comilla Victorians. He once again led his side in scoring with 332 runs in 10 innings at an average of 36.88 and two fifty-pluses.

Tamim led his team in scoring during the 2019 Bangladesh Premier League amassing 467 runs in 14 innings at an average of 38.91 with two fifty-pluses and one century. He scored a century in the championship game against the Dhaka Dynamites (141 off 61).

was chosen to play for the Dhaka Platoon in the Bangladesh Premier League for the 2019–20 season in November. He also became the first cricketer in BPL history to surpass 2000 runs throughout the competition. In 12 innings he scored 396 runs with three fifty-sixes.

Tamim was acquired by the Minister Group Dhaka for the 2022 Bangladesh Premier League. In 9 innings Tamim scored 407 runs at an average of 58.14 including four fifties and one century. He scored a century against the Sylhet Sunrisers (111 off 64).

Carribean Premier League

For the inaugural Caribbean Premier League in 2013 Tamim was categorized as an elite player from abroad. He was chosen by the St. Lucia Zouks scoring 162 runs in 7 innings while hitting one home run. He participated in a match at Lord's in July 2014 as a member of the Rest of the World team.

Pakistan Super League

Peshawar Zalmi signed Tamim for the 2016 Pakistan Super League. He led his side in scoring with 267 runs scored in six innings at an average of 66.75 and three fifty-sixes. Tamim scored 94 runs in five innings and a half-century in the 2017 Pakistan Super League.

In six innings of the 2018 Pakistan Super League he scored 161 runs. He spoke on behalf of the Lahore Qalandars in 2020. He went three innings and scored 83 runs.

International Career

Tamim a young Bangladeshi cricketer with talent was selected for the 2007 World Cup after competing in the 2006 U-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka. He faced India in the group stage of the tournament and scored 51 runs off of 53 deliveries to help his team win the match.

Tamim got his first Test century against a West Indies team that had been damaged by conflicts between players and administrators during Bangladesh's tour of the West Indies in July and August 2009. Seven players were making their Test debuts at the time. His efforts with the bat led Bangladesh to a historic triumph their first Test victory over the West Indies their first triumph abroad and their second Test victory overall. 

He finished with 128 and earned the title of Man of the Match for his efforts (he also scored 33 in the first innings). It was a level wicket and if you concentrate hard and seek to bat straight it's a nice track to score on Tamim remarked when describing his innings.

I have only played in 11 Tests and I'm only 20 years old so I believe there will be many more innings like these. Bangladesh eventually won the second Test giving them their first international series victory. Iqbal scored 197 runs during the series which put him in first place for Bangladesh.

Wisden Cricketer Of The Year

Tamim hit 86 runs off of 120 deliveries in the first innings of the first Test against England in March 2010. He completed the feat in 19 innings making him the Bangladesh player to score 1 000 Test runs the fastest in terms of innings. In addition he passed fellow countryman Mohammad Ashraful to become the third-youngest player in Test history (after Sachin Tendulkar) to accumulate 1 000 Test runs.

Bangladesh played three-match ODIs and two more Tests against England in May of that year. Tamim scored a century in every Test match even though his team lost 2-0. Tamim was recognized as one of the four Cricketers of the Year in 2011 by the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack for his exploits against England.

He also won the Wisden Test Player of the Year award in October beating out Graeme Swann and Virender Sehwag who finished second and third respectively. Tamim accrued 837 runs at an average of 59.78 during the qualifying period for the prize. 

He did this in seven Test matches. It was only the second time a player from Bangladesh has received the honor; Shakib Al Hasan had been chosen the year before. 16 key contracts were announced by the BCB at the beginning of November. Tamim was one of the top six athletes.

Bangladesh and Pakistan engaged in a home series following the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Tamim played a fantastic ODI series against Pakistan where he scored two consecutive match-winning hundreds. Eventually Bangladesh whitewashed Pakistan in an ODI series for the first time and Tamim was named the series' Man of the Match.

2016 and Beyond

In India for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 Tamim Iqbal scored the most runs. This featured an undefeated 103 against Oman during the tournament's group stage. He beat the previous record of 88* and became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to reach a hundred runs in a T20I match (also held by him). Bangladesh was later able to advance to the Super 10 round thanks to this. Tamim also held the top spot on the tournament's hit chart for number six.

Tamim missed around three weeks of competitive cricket in August 2016 due to a small finger fracture. This implies that his eligibility for the ODI series against Afghanistan may be in doubt. Nonetheless he was chosen for ODIs and hit 80 and 118 against Afghanistan in the first and third ODIs respectively.

Tamim became the first Bangladeshi to reach 10 000 runs in an international game during the first One-Day international against Sri Lanka on March 26 2017.

2017 Champions trophy

Iqbal got a hundred against Pakistan in a practice match at Edgbaston in Birmingham in advance of the 2017 Champions Trophy. He hit 128 off 142 balls when playing against England in the opening league match at The Oval bringing the team's total to 305 which was later chased down by the latter. 

In the following game against Australia which finished in a tie he scored 95 points off 114 balls. He finished the tournament with 293 runs after scoring 70 off 82 balls in a losing effort against India in the semi-final. For the 2017 Champions Trophy the ICC and Cricinfo named him to their Team of the Tournament.

He was selected to play in three Twenty20 international games against Pakistan in the 2017 Independence Cup in Lahore in August 2017.

2018

Tamim Iqbal scored his 6 000th ODI run on January 23 2018 against Zimbabwe making him the first Bangladeshi batsman to do so. Tamim also surpassed Sri Lankan veteran Sanath Jayasuriya's 2 514 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium during this innings to become the best run-scorer in ODIs at a single location.

He was one of ten cricketers who received a central contract from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in April 2018 in preparation for the upcoming season. He was selected in the same month to play for the Rest of the World XI in the one-off T20I match against the West Indies at Lord's on May 31 2018.

Tamim achieved the second-highest ODI score by a Bangladeshi player after Shakib Al Hasan in July 2018 when he hit 287 runs with an average of 143.5 in a three-match series against the West Indies and won the series' man of the series award for the fourth time in his ODI career. He quickly rose to the 13th spot in the ICC ODI Batsman Ranking with a rating point total of 737 the highest of his career.

2019 Cricket World Cup and Beyond

He was included in Bangladesh's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup in April 2019. Tamim played in his 200th ODI on July 2 2019 against India.

Mashrafe Mortaza Bangladesh's usual captain missed the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in July 2019 owing to a hamstring injury. For the first time ever in ODIs Tamim was selected as captain. He had only ever led Bangladesh in one Test match which was in 2017 against New Zealand.

2020

He recorded the greatest individual score by a Bangladeshi batsman in the second ODI against Zimbabwe in March 2020. He was also the second Bangladeshi batsman to achieve a century at Sylhet and the first to reach 7 000 runs in ODIs. 

He made a 292-run opening wicket partnership with Litton Das in the third ODI the greatest partnership for Bangladesh for any wicket in ODIs scoring 128 runs off 109 balls.

ODI Captaincy

After Mashrafe Mortaza resigned as Bangladesh's ODI captain during the Zimbabwe series in March 2020 Tamim was named the team's new captain on March 8 2020.

Bangladesh played their first ODI series against the Windies in January 2021 after he assumed the role of full-time ODI captain. He was the series' leading run scorer with 158 runs in three games as Bangladesh went on to win the series 3-0.

Sri Lanka visited Bangladesh in May 2021 for a three-match ODI series. Bangladesh won the first two games lost the third and went on to win the ODI series by a score of 2-1. Against Sri Lanka Bangladesh won their first-ever bilateral series.

Retirement

Iqbal took a six-month vacation from T20Is on January 27 2022 and then on June 17 2022 shortly after defeating the West Indies 3-0 in the ODI series he declared his retirement from T20I cricket in a Facebook post Consider me retired from T20Is as of right now. Thank you all so much.

Controversy

Tamim Iqbal the captain of Bangladesh was fined 15% of his match fees for using profanity during his team's third ODI match against Sri Lanka in the World Cup Super League. After Tamim was overheard cursing into the stump mic he was found guilty.

Tamim was deemed to have violated Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and support staff which deals with the usage of an audible obscenity during an international match according to a statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Tamim's disciplinary record was also updated with one demerit point and this was his first infraction in the previous 24 months.

In the final game of the three-match series Bangladesh was chasing Sri Lanka's score of 286 when the incident happened in the tenth over of their innings. Once his caught-behind dismissal was unsuccessfully reviewed Tamim used crude words. A formal hearing was not necessary because the Bangladesh skipper agreed to the offense and accepted the punishment suggested by ICC match referee Neeyamur Rashid.

The on-field umpires Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and Tanvir Ahmed the third umpire Gazi Sohel and the fourth official Masudur Rahman all made accusations against Tamim. Level 1 violations are subject to a minimum official reprimand a maximum fine equal to 50% of the player's match fee and one or two demerit points.
