He had no idea that he would be given the opportunity to play in the senior team of an ISL team and in fourteen games this season while notable players like Anas Edathodika and Salam Ranjan Singh saw far more playing time than him.

He began playing football at the Chandigarh Football Academy when he was just 9 years old and after being chosen for the India U-14 team he regretfully did not make the U-17 World Cup roster. He played for the reserve squad in the Second Level I-League for Indian Arrows for a year before joining ATK where he also played in the Calcutta League and assisted his team in being promoted to the top division.

Sumit Rathi began his professional career at AIFF Elite Academy before moving on to play for Indian Arrows in the I-League in 2017–18.
