He was born on February 7th, 1934 in the city of Varanasi, which is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. Over the course of his career, which lasted from the 1960s all the way through to the 1990s, actor Sujit Kumar was in more than 250 films. His work in the film industry was prolific.

Kumar died in 2010 from cancer, an illness he had been suffering from since 2007. His wife, Kiran Singh, passed away in 2005; they had two children together, a son named Jatin Kumar who works in the film industry, and a daughter named Henna Singh. At a condolence meeting held on February 8, 2010, beside PVR Cinema in Juhu, Mumbai, many of his friends from the entertainment industry paid their respects, including members of the Kapoor family, the Roshan family, and the Khanna family. The meeting was held at the Indian Medical Association.
