Shivon Zilis mother is Sharda Zilis.  She is of Punjabi Indian and Canadian ancestry and she attributes her well-known large blue eyes to her Punjabi immigrant mother. She is an only child and one of her parents was formerly employed by the federal government. Zilis received her diploma from Unionville High School in Markham. She received athletic and academic financial aid while attending Yale University where she earned degrees in economics and philosophy in 2008. She connects with David Hume and Friedrich Nietzsche as philosophers.

She was a goalkeeper for the Yale ice hockey team and holds the record for having one of the best save percentages in school history.  She read fiction and played the guitar and drums in addition to competing in athletics. Zilis has been researching artificial intelligence ever since she was motivated to read Ray Kurzweil's The Age of Spiritual Machines by the Canadian band Our Lady Peace.

Zilis and Elon Musk had twins who were born in November 2021 according to information obtained from Travis County Texas court records which were obtained in July 2022. Despite the criticism he has received she said in 2020 that Musk is the person she most admires. Musk and Zilis listed the same Austin address in court documents to register the twins' names according to those documents.

Shivon Zilis had originally intended to move back to Canada after receiving her degree from Yale but she instead began working for IBM in New York where she worked in financial technology in developing nations particularly Peru and Indonesia. She was a founder investor and partner of Bloomberg Beta backed by Bloomberg L.P. using what she refers to as machine intelligence from 2012 to 2018. 

She serves on the boards of the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute and C100. She is also a Fellow at the Creative Destruction Lab a machine learning incubator at the University of Toronto.

At the University of Toronto she co-hosts an annual conference that brings together the top researchers authors innovators and investors in artificial intelligence. She was one of LinkedIn's 35 Under 35 and Forbes' 30 Under 30. For venture capital Zilis was included in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2015. Zilis works for Neuralink as the head of operations and special projects and is directly responsible to Musk. 

Through her volunteer work at OpenAI where she is currently a board member Zilis got to know Musk. Musk co-founded OpenAI but as of 2019 he is no longer a part of the company or its board of directors. She worked as a project director for the Autopilot product and chip design team at Tesla Inc. from 2017 to 2019.

Controversy

A tabloid reported on July 6 2022 that Elon Musk and Shivon Zilis had given birth to twins in November 2021. According to a court document obtained by the media the twins were given their father's name as their last name and their mother's last name Zilis as their middle name. In May 2022 the petition received the judge's approval in Astin Texas.
