Biography

Shilpa Rao an Indian singer was born and brought up in Jamshedpur. She was born on April 11, 1984. She replaced the original name Apeksha Rao with Shilpa Rao.  She claims that because Shilpa has to do with art, she can relate to the name more. Her father, S Venkat Rao, who has a degree in music, taught and trained her in singing when she was a young child. 

At the age of 13, Rao met Hariharan, who inspired her to pursue singing. At Hariharan's insistence, Rao started training under Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Her Bollywood career began when composer Mithoon invited her to record the song Tose Naina from the 2007 film Anwar. The song went on to become one of the year's most well-known songs.

With the release of Woh Ajnabi from The Train (2007) and Khuda Jaane from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), Rao gained worldwide notoriety. The latter song led to her being nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. As part of Yash Chopra's farewell song Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Rao collaborated with A. R. Rahman on the song Ishq Shava in 2012.
