Biography

Shalmali Kholgade is an Indian playback singer who primarily sings in Hindi films. She has performed in languages other than Hindi, including Marathi, Bengali, Telugu, and Tamil. She has garnered various honours, including a Filmfare Award and a Filmfare Award Marathi, and her vocal technique has been appreciated.

Shalmali was born on 2 January 1990. She is 33 years old as of 2023. Her zodiac sign is Capricorn. She started her career when she was 16 years old. 

Childhood and Education

Shalmali was born and brought up in Mumbai, India. She did her graduation from St. Xavier's College in Mumbai. Shalmali began performing at the age of 16 and has had music lessons since she was eight years old from her mother who is an Indian classical singer and theatre personality. She later continued her music studies with Shubhada Paradkar, and she was recently accepted by the Los Angeles College of Music for their April semester but decided not to attend owing to her recording obligations.

Career

Shalmali made her Bollywood playback singing debut in 2012 with the song Pareshaan from the film Ishaqzaade, composed by Amit Trivedi. The song was a critical and financial triumph, topping Indian charts.For  Pareshaan Shalmali received various honours, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Her other two hits in 2012 were Daaru Desi from Cocktail and Aga Bai from Aiyyaa. Shalmali's first commercially successful music, Lat Lag Gayee from the film Race 2, was released in 2013. The song was at the top of the charts for several weeks and became extremely popular in dance clubs. Her critical and commercial success continued with the song Balam Pichkari from the film Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Kholgade garnered numerous nominations for the song, including her second Filmfare Award nomination for Best Female Playback Singer. 

She also sung the title song for Shuddh Desi Romance, Besharmi Ki Height and Shanivar Raati for Main Tera Hero, D Se Dance for Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, and Shayarana for Daawat-E-Ishq, all of which received critical acclaim. She was highly praised for her performance in the song Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai from the sports drama Sultan (2016).She received critical acclaim for her singing style in a number of chart-topping songs, including Aga Bai from Aiyyaa (2012), Chingam Chabake from Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (2013), Mohobbat Buri Bemari from Bombay Velvet (2015), Shakira from Welcome to Karachi (2015), and Naach Meri Jaan from ABCD 2 (2015). Shalmali's debut regional song Raja Raja from the 2013 Tamil film Naan Rajavaga Pogiren was positively praised. Her song Oday Oday from the love film Raja Rani was a hit in the southern portion of India, propelling her to stardom in the South Indian film industry. She went on to have more regional hits, including Kala Koi Geli for the Bengali film Proloy (2013), Preminchaa for the Telugu film Toofan (2013), Maria for the Bengali film Herogiri (2015), Jil Jil Jil for the Telugu film Jil (2015), Tu Mila for the Marathi film Timepass 2 (2015), and Kangaroo for the Marathi film Highway (2015). 

In addition, she was one of the audition judges for Sony Entertainment Television's reality show Indian Idol Junior. She was also a judge on the Colours Marathi show Sur Nava Dhyas Nava.On Valentine's Day 2020, Kholgade produced a popular tune called Kalle Kalle that celebrates singledom.Kholgade will make her musical debut with the Marathi film June, which will be released in 2020.Shalmali made her movie debut in the 2009 East Indian Konkani-Marathi film Tu Maza Jeev, directed by Ranjan Singh and released on Maharashtra Day. The film was a middling hit in India and received mixed reviews, although she was acclaimed for her performance. Last year, Shalmali paid a two-hour tribute to one of her favourite singers, Amy Winehouse, at Blue Frog in Mumbai, which was well-attended. She is also a vocalist with Mikey McCleary's popular act 'The Barman,' where she has done lovely renditions of vintage Bollywood songs revamped with a hint of sensuous, old school jazz, and is featured on their second album, 'B Seventy'. Shalmali's flexibility as a performer was further enhanced when she appeared as a soloist with a Latvian company in the Cabaret Bombaloo, which toured Moscow, Yerevan, and Armenia. She has worked as a supporting vocalist for Ali Zafar's songs and has been singing professionally in Mumbai for numerous years.
