Biography

Sandeep's performances are known for the depth and realism he brings to his roles by putting himself fully into the people he plays. He has shown how versatile he is by playing a wide range of characters well, from unhappy people to heroes. He has a very wide range of characters he can play. Sandeep was born to Shrikant and Lata Kulkarni in Pune, Maharashtra. He was nurtured in a Marathi Deshastha Brahmin family from the middle class. He also attended the J. J. School of Arts in Mumbai.

Prabhakar Kolte and Atul Dodia mentored him during his journey to becoming an artist at Sir J. J. School of Art. Kulkarni took part in a group monsoon display in 1986, his first exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree the same year. While painting and freelancing for advertising agencies, Sandeep was also interested in acting until he met Pandit Satyadev Dubey and worked with him on rigorous theatre and workshops, including a large production of a Hindi classical play called Andha Yug in which he shared the stage with amazing actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Amrish Puri, Akaash Khurana, and Mohan Bhandari. Sandeep found himself well suited to be an actor and theatre director after being heavily affected and inspired by Dubeyji's teachings and simultaneously working with notable theatre directors such as Vijaya Mehta, Sunil Shanbhaug, and Chetan Datar.

Career

After four years of intense theatre in English, Marathi, and Hindi, his career in television began to take form. On Zed TV, he played a young Muslim lawyer Salim who falls in love with a local Muslim woman in 9 Malabar Hill, a news reporter in Farz on DD Metro, an underworld don who deals with drugs in Swabhiman on DD, and a counsellor in Nyay on DD Metro. In Shriram Raghavan's much-talked-about one-hour suspense drama First Kill, he played a cop who solves the mystery of an old couple refusing to accept their son's dead body.Sandeep's film career began with his debut appearance in Mammo (1994), directed by the famous Shyam Benegal and set against the backdrop of the 1947 India-Pakistan partition. He was shown as an immigration official (Apte) attempting to assist the immigrant protagonist Mammo.

In Sudhir Mishra's Is Raat Ki Subaah Nahin (1996), he played Shankar, a thug who hunts the hero throughout the plot while donning a new pair of shoes that bite and eventually harm him. His performance adds to the film's dark humour.

In Govind Nihalani's Hazar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998), he plays a Naxalite who subsequently becomes an activist despite his friends being apprehended and executed.In the critically acclaimed Dombivali Fast, directed by Nishikant Kamath, Sandeep played a common man from downtown (Dombivali) on the verge of a busy, frustrating, unimproved, and deteriorating daily lifestyle who eventually starts straightening things out.

 This film received the National Award, and Sandeep received the best Acotr Award from the State as well as other award celebrations.From 2012, he founded his own production company, which produced films such as Premsutra in Marathi and Dombivli Return in Hindi and Marathi (bilingual), which were shown at a number of national and international film festivals, and he was named best actor at the Indian Critics Choice Awards in 2020. His Hotstar webseries City Of Dreams, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, has a massive global viewership, and the second season will premiere soon.

Mammo

Shyam Benegal directed Mammo in 1994. It stars Farida Jalal, Surekha Sikri, Amit Phalke, and Rajit Kapur.

It is the narrative of Madhav Apte, a middle-class bank employee who is a regular, law-abiding, and honest guy who is always frustrated by the injustice and corruption that infects all aspects of his life. The film depicts Apte's mental disintegration as he reaches his breaking point, as well as his rampage across Mumbai as a vigilante to put things right. Sandeep Kulkarni plays the lead, alongside Shilpa Tulaskar and Sandesh Jadhav.

D Day

D-Day is a 2013 action thriller film co-produced by DAR Motion Pictures and Emmay Entertainment in Hindi. Nikhil Advani directs the film, which stars Rishi Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Arjun Rampal, Huma Qureshi, Sandeep Kulkarni  and Shruti Haasan.
