In 1980 Burman married Asha Bhosle. They collaborated on numerous hit songs and organised a lot of live shows. They did not live together when he was nearing the end of his life. Burman struggled financially especially later in his life.

In the course of his lengthy career he released close to 331 movies including 292 Hindi 31 Bengali 2 Oriya and Tamil and 1 Marathi. Additionally he provided music for five Hindi and Marathi television series.

Teesri Manzil was Burman's first successful effort as a cinema music composer. Vijay Anand also claimed that he had set up a music session for Burman before Nasir Hussain. Teesri Manzil had six songs all of which were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and sung by Mohammed Rafi. Burman gave credit to Sultanpuri for recommending him to Nasir Hussain the film's producer and writer. Four of these involved Burman's later-married wife Asha Bhosle in duets. For six of his films including Yaadon Ki Baaraat Pyar Ka Mausam and Baharon Ke Sapne Nasir Hussain later hired Burman and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri. Burman's music for Padosan earned favorable reviews. In the meantime he carried on working as his father's assistant.

With the Kishore Kumar songs in the Rajesh Khanna-starring movies Burman enjoyed enormous popularity in the 1970s.  Shakti Samanta of Aradhana fame began a run of films in the 1970s with the musical smash Kati Patang. For various movies in 1972 including Seeta Aur Geeta Rampur Ka Lakshman Mere Jeevan Saathi Bombay To Goa Apna Desh and Parichay Burman composed the music. Hits like Yaadon Ki Baaraat Aap Ki Kasam Sholay and Aandhi contributed to his sustained popularity.

In 1975 he also wrote a song for a short documentary called Maa Ki Pukaar. Burman also finished the Mili soundtrack after his father S. D. Burman fell into a coma.

• R D Burman was raised in a musical family. He is a member of the Manikya royal dynasty of Tripura.
• When he created his first song he was just 9 years old. For the film Funtoosh he wrote the song Aye Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa (1956). He also wrote the melody for the 1957 song Sar Jo Tera Chakraye from the movie Pyaasa.
• He rose to fame in the Indian Film Music Industry throughout the 1970s. He wrote the English song I'm Falling In Love With A Stranger lyrics in 1975. When Parveen Babi and Amitabh Bachchan meet in a pub during a scene in the movie a song was playing in the background of that scene.
• With the release of the movie Yeh Desh in 1984 he launched Kumar Sanu into the music industry. He offered Abhijeet Bhattacharya a chance in the movie Anand Aur Anand that same year which ultimately led to Abhijeet's career taking off.
