Pritam Chakraborty also known as Pritam is a composer instrumentalist guitarist and singer from India. He made his film debut as a co-composer in the 2001 Hindi film Tere Liye after working as an ad jingle composer. As a solo composer he won the Zee Cine Award for Best Track of the Year for his work on the title track of Dhoom. In a career spanning nearly two decades he has composed music for over 125 Bollywood films and has received numerous awards.

Pritam's passion for music began during his college days. He started playing guitar and formed a band named Jotugriher Pakhi with his friends. Later he moved to Mumbai to pursue his dream of becoming a music composer. In 2001 he made his debut as a music director with the movie Tere Liye.

He attended St. James' School and graduated from Presidency College with a bachelor's degree in geology. After five years of dating Pritam married Smita in May 2007. They have two children a son named Purvesh (born in 2007) and a daughter named Ishqa (b. November 2009). His son was born more than a month early and required care in an incubator.

Plagarism Controversy

After being accused of plagiarism numerous times Pritam's situation became complicated when an Iranian band Barobax filed a lawsuit against him for stealing the music of Pyaar Ki Pungi (Agent Vinod) from their track Soosan Khanoom. The song once again put Pritam in the spotlight but he consistently denied the allegations. 

While talking to Hindustan Times Pritam said  Yes I did make mistakes initially. But once I realised it I have been particular about my music. However people keep making false allegations because it’s easy to do that. Since the last three years I have stopped taking false allegations seriously. For example the Iranian band that said I had plagiarised ‘Pungi’ (Agent Vinod; 2012) had to give an apology in court for using my name falsely.

• Pritam's father despite being an insurance officer used to teach music to young children for a small fee. As a result it's no surprise that his father was instrumental in honing his musical abilities.
• Pritam began studying for a master's degree in Science after earning a bachelor's degree in Geology (M. Sc.). His dream of becoming a musician however had taken a back seat as a result of this. As a result Pritam dropped out of his master's programme and enrolled in a Sound Recording and Engineering course at FTII Pune.
• Pritam had the opportunity to compose the background score for a film by renowned Hungarian filmmaker Istvan Gaal while at the FTII.
• Pritam went on to work as a lead guitarist for a number of bands including Chandrabindoo and 'Jotugriher Pakhi'. The latter group has even released a cassette.
• Pritam moved to Mumbai in 1997 in search of better opportunities. Fortunately his period of struggle was brief as he soon began receiving contracts for composing ad jingles. He created jingles for well-known brands such as Santro Emami Thums Up McDonald's Complan and others.
