One of the Infosys Technologies founders is Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy also known by his stage name Narayana Murthy. N.R. Narayana Murthy also known as Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy is a well-known Indian businessman and software engineer. 

He is also one of the seven founders of Infosys Technologies an Indian company that provides global consulting and IT services. Before retiring and assuming the title of chairman emeritus he served as the company's founder chairman chief executive officer (CEO) president and chief mentor. Before working for Infosys Murthy was the chief systems programmer at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and Patni Computer Systems in Pune (Maharashtra).

In 1981 he started Infosys serving as its CEO from 1981 to 2002 and as its chairman from 1981 to 2011. In 2011 he withdrew from the board and was given the title of chairman emeritus. In June 2013 Murthy was chosen to hold the position of executive chairman for five years. According to Fortune magazine Murthy is among the top 12 business leaders of all time.

Time magazine and CNBC have referred to him as the father of the Indian IT business due to his role in outsourcing in India. Murthy is the recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri honors.

Murthy began his employment at IIM Ahmedabad as a research associate for a faculty member and ultimately rose to the position of a principal systems programmer. For Electronics Corporation of India Limited he designed and implemented a BASIC interpreter while working on India's first time-sharing computer system. He founded the business Softronics. He joined Patni Computer Systems in Pune after that business failed after roughly a year and a half.

Murthy states that he became a compassionate capitalist from a confused leftist/communist after being arbitrarily detained and exiled in a communist border town in 1974 which inspired him to found Infosys. In 1981 Murthy and his team of six software developers launched Infosys with an Rs. 10 000 seed investment from his wife Sudha Murthy. From 1981 until 2002 Murthy led Infosys as CEO for 21 years.
 
Co-founder Nandan Nilekani succeeded him. He developed devised and put into action at Infosys a worldwide delivery model for outsourcing IT services from India. From 2002 until 2006 he served as the board's chairman. Subsequently he also took on the role of chief mentor. He left the corporation in August 2011 and was given the title of chairman emeritus.

Murthy has served as a director on the boards of DBS Bank Unilever ICICI and NDTV. He is currently an independent director on the corporate board of HSBC. As a trustee of the Rhodes Trust the Infosys Prize the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and other educational and charitable organizations he also serves on their advisory boards and councils. 

These organizations include Cornell University INSEAD ESSEC the Ford Foundation the UN Foundation the Indo-British Partnership the Asian Institute of Management and INSEAD. Additionally he serves as the Public Health Foundation of India's Chairman of the Governing Board. He serves on the British Telecommunications advisory board for the Asia Pacific. Murthy rejoined Infosys as executive chairman and director in June 2013. He stepped down as executive chairman in June 2014 served as non-executive chairman until October and then was named chairman emeritus. Murthy also serves on the strategic board which provides strategic policy and governance advice to Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas a major legal firm. He belongs to the International Advisory Board of IESE (IAB).

In 2016 Murthy discussed How to Be a Better Manager in an interview with Harvard Business Review Ascend. Murthy expressed worries about suspected corporate governance failings at Infosys in 2017. However the business later refuted these allegations.

The world's largest provider of technology services is Infosys Ltd. (INFY). NS consented on Wednesday to pay $34 million to close a U.S. inquiry into the common practice of Indian companies to fly employees to client locations in the US on temporary visas. Around 15 000 individuals work for Infosys in the US. 

According to a corporate filing as of March 31 roughly 10 800 of those individuals had H-1B visas which permit a worker to remain and work in the US for up to six years and 1 600 had temporary L-1 visas.

According to Infosys the I-9 forms and B-1 business permits were the main subjects of the U.S. probe. While in the country on a B-1 visa the holder is permitted to attend meetings but not conduct business. The Bangalore-based company stated that its use of B-1 visas was for legitimate business purposes and was not in any way intended to violate the criteria of the H-1B program. 

A person with direct knowledge of the situation who declined to be named said that approximately one B-1 visa has been obtained by Infosys for every ten H-1B visas. Since 2011 American officials have been investigating Infosys' use of visas. As it tried to end the U.S. probe Infosys set up a reserve of $35 million this month which includes legal costs.
