Murali Vijay is an Indian international cricketer who bats right-handed as an opener. He was a regular member of the Indian Test team till 2018 and currently plays first-class cricket for Tamil Nadu.

Vijay played club cricket in Chennai after failing his 12th-class exam and starting to play cricket at the age of 17. He was selected for the Tamil Nadu Under-22 squad after failing his 12th-class exam. He quickly rose through the ranks and made his first-class debut in 2006 for the Tamil Nadu senior team. He was one of the leading run scorers in his first-class debut the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy.

By October 2008 he had represented South Zone India Red and India A and in November 2008 he was given his Test debut after the ICC banned the team's regular opener Gautam Gambhir for one match

He began playing cricket at the age of 17. In 2003 he played his first club cricket for Alwarpet in Chennai. He was then named to the Tamil Nadu Under-22 squad for the CK Nayudu Trophy in 2004-05. 

Tamil Nadu Under-22 won the tournament but Vijay averaged just 26.45 in six matches as the opener. In 2005 he continued to play club cricket before being called up to the Tamil Nadu Under-22 side for the 2005-06 CK Nayudu Trophy. He failed to impress once more averaging 26.50 in three games.

Despite his family background Vijay was never interested in 'bookish knowledge' as a child. He failed his 12th-grade examinations whereas his sister received 98 percent. He later left home to 'discover' himself and began playing snooker for money in snooker parlors. He also started his own business.

When Vijay was homeless and sleeping in parks he had several older college-aged pals who helped him out. For six months he shared a bedless hostel room with others. After passing the board exam he enrolled at Vivekananda College in Mylapore Chennai which was known for its emphasis on sports particularly cricket. It was just what he needed because he had been playing cricket since he was nine years old.

Vijay began focusing on college cricket at the age of 17 after failing to make the U-19 state squad. He played with the leather ball for the first time here. Former national bowling coach Bharat Arun noticed him and gave him a berth on the Chemplast team at Chennai's cricket club.

Early Career

Vijay rose to fame during his debut first-class season the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy when he finished third in the tournament trailing only Karnataka's Robin Uthappa and Bengal's Manoj Tiwary. He made his first-class debut against Delhi at the beginning of this tournament scoring a fifty in his first innings. 

Vijay appeared in all seven Ranji Trophy matches for Tamil Nadu in 2007-08 scoring 582 runs at an average of 58.2 with two hundred including a high score of 230* against Saurashtra. In September 2008 Vijay was selected for the India A team to face the touring New Zealand A team in two four-day matches.

Test Career

Vijay made his Test debut against Australia at Nagpur in November 2008 in the fourth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Vijay batted alongside Virender Sehwag and helped India get off to a strong start in both innings. Vijay made 33 and 41 leading to 98 and 116 opening stands.

Vijay was selected to the Indian ODI squad for the first three matches against the touring England team following his performance in his debut Test. He did not play and was dropped after the first three matches when senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar returned from a break.

Vijay hit his first Test century outside India against England in July 2014 at Trent Bridge. With 402 runs from five matches he finished as India's highest run scorer in the series. In June 2015 he made his sixth Test century against Bangladesh in a one-match Test series.

ODI Career

On February 27 2010 Vijay made his ODI debut against South Africa in the third and final one-day international. He scored 25 runs in just 16 balls. Vijay was selected for New Zealand's 5-ODI series in 2010 and he played the first three games scoring an average of 30. He was afterward replaced by wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel for the remaining two ODIs.

International T20 Career

Vijay was chosen for the 2010 ICC World Twenty20. In India's terrible campaign he averaged just under 15 and failed to make good openings in all matches.

IPL Career

 Vijay played in the Indian Premier League for his hometown team Chennai Super Kings till the sixth season before joining the Delhi Daredevils. He was selected captain of Kings XI Punjab in April 2016 replacing South African David Miller in the middle of the season. Due to wrist surgery he missed the entire 2017 season.

DK’s name Controversy

Murali Vijay an Indian batter who was a member of the Test team for many years found himself on the receiving end during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL 2022) game. Vijay got into an argument with cricket supporters after they began screaming Dinesh Karthik's name during a Tamil Nadu Premier League match.

The controversy occurred when the Ruby Tricky Warriors faced the Madhurai Panthers. Murali Vijay was harassed by supporters who were screaming Dinesh Karthik's name as he stood near the boundary line.
It should be noted that the couple has a past with Karthik's first wife Nikita Vanjara allegedly having an affair with Murali Vijay. DK and Nikita later divorced and while she later married Vijay Karthik also married later. DK is married to India's top squash player Dipika Pallikal.

Murali Vijay's reaction to the audience screaming DK's name astonished everyone and went viral on social media. Vijay appeared to be bothered by the shouts and asked fans to refrain from using DK's name.
