When Narinder Bedi saw the theatre play Khan had written he requested him to collaborate with Inder Raj Anand on the script for Jawani Diwani for which Khan was paid 1500 rupees. He was seen by comedian Agha while appearing in the play Taash Ke Patey and Agha subsequently suggested that actor Dilip Kumar should attend the performance. Impressed Dilip Kumar hired him for his upcoming movies Sagina and Bairaag. Khan recalls this as the event that launched his cinematic career in an interview with Rediff. After being hired to write the script for Jawani Diwani which launched his career as a script writer he had previously written plays for theatres.

Kader Khan suffered from the degenerative illness supranuclear palsy. He was admitted to a hospital in Canada on December 28 2018 claiming to be experiencing breathlessness.
