Josh Hazlewood is an Australia Test bowler who made his debut in December 2014. He is a tall accurate fast bowler with unwavering line and length. The baggy green felt like a long time coming even though he was only 23 at the time since Hazlewood had been so well-regarded for so long. In his first one-day international against England at Southampton at age 19 he joined Craig McDermott and Ray Bright as the only Australian fast bowlers under the age of 20 to have played the format thus far. At 17 he had become the youngest fast bowler to be chosen by New South Wales.
Hazlewood was originally selected for Australia's Test tour of India in late 2010 but withdrew due to a back stress injury. It took him another four years to play his first Test after gaining a lot of strength for his 196cm frame. Despite just being in his final year of high school in Tamworth rural New South Wales Hazlewood who had Glenn McGrath as his childhood hero was given a rookie state contract for the 2008–09 season. He had not even participated in a game for a Sydney grade team at the time. In contrast Hazlewood statistically kept up with McGrath during the early years of his international career or came close to doing so. This proved the observers who had noticed something in Hazlewood correct. Both men had made their Test debuts at the age of 23 and Hazlewood just one inning behind his idol had taken 100 Test wickets in 46 innings.
He was named joint vice-captain of the Test team following the leadership shake-up caused by the Newlands ball-tampering scandal but he was unable to travel to the UAE because of a back problem. He lost his position as vice-captain after the 2018–19 home series against India due to a second back injury and despite having participated in Australia's successful World Cup campaign in 2015 he was the one who took the wicket to win the Ashes at Old Trafford a few months later.
He was acquired by the Chennai Super Kings in the 2020 IPL auction in February of that year in preparation for that season of the Indian Premier League. Josh Hazlewood was purchased by Royal Challengers Bangalore for 7.75 crores during the 2022 Indian Premier League Mega Auction.
