Jonny Bairstow Cricket

The son of former England wicketkeeper David Bairstow Jonny Bairstow is a tenacious wicketkeeper-batter who has established himself as a force in the middle order. Even with Jos Buttler vying for the gloves Bairstow's road was far from simple but Yorkshire's prolific run-making eventually built a case that England's selectors could not ignore. Because of his pick runs started to come in.

To Bairstow's dismay the question over whether he may be more effective playing as a specialist hitter has never been put to rest despite the fact that his wicketkeeping rarely receives unanimous praise. But he started to leave a lasting impression the minute he scored an emotional first Test century in Cape Town where his father had many off-season connections. His influence on the one-day team where he formed a world-class opening partnership with Jason Roy which helped England win its first World Cup in 2019 was incomparable.

He has battled a propensity to play outside the lines and as a result he stands tall with his bat raised enhancing his aggressive appearance. He is a very driven and independent-minded individual. His keeping has also become more secure as a result of intensive training with England's wicketkeeping coach Bruce French.

Early on Bairstow established himself as a gifted all-around athlete participating in right-back tryouts with Leeds United. However cricket quickly took control. He made his debut with Yorkshire's Under-15s and went on to play for Yorkshire's 2nd XI Academy team and England Under-17s before being named Young Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year in 2007. He soon signed a full-time contract with Yorkshire following in his father's footsteps. Eight years old at the time of his father's suicide was Jonny. It took courage just to participate in the game and to represent the same county. In June 2009 he made an impressive first-class debut against Somerset scoring 82 runs in his second innings and quickly earned a spot in the starting lineup. His selection by England's Performance Program and participation in the successful Caribbean tour of the England Lions in January 2011 brought him additional honors.

He recorded his first first-class hundred against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in May of that year by then Yorkshire's first-choice keeper. To emphasize his breakthrough he made it a double after previously passing fifty 17 times in 34 first-class matches without reaching three digits. In a record-breaking ninth-wicket partnership for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire (which had stood since 1899) he and England's recently retired opening bowler Ryan Sidebottom scored 151 runs together during his brilliant attacking innings. Bairstow and Sidebottom were the sons of two of Yorkshire's most beloved former players; there is no better way to illustrate how talent is passed down through the generations.

When Bairstow made his one-day international debut against India at Cardiff he hit an unbeaten 41 off 21 balls supporting the theory that he would eventually develop into a specialist batter. He recovered with a match-winning 60 off 46 against Pakistan in a T20I in the UAE and after a strong start to the 2012 season he received a call-up to the Test squad to play West Indies after a difficult India tour exposed the realities of international cricket. His and Roy's opening partnership was already one of the most productive partnerships in history and their back-to-back hundreds in crucial World Cup group games against New Zealand and India were crucial to England's victory. He furthered his reputation in the IPL but in Tests he retreated to the background. The national selector Ed Smith advised him to improve his red-ball strategy but he rarely had the chance to do so and his comeback in 2021 was only partially successful.

Jonny Bairstow’s IPL Career

He was purchased by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the player auction for the 2019 Indian Premier League in December 2018. Bairstow signed a short-term deal to play for the Kerala Kings in the T10 League in Sharjah at the end of November 2018 following the conclusion of the England vs. Sri Lanka Test series where he shared the field with Eoin Morgan.

He set a new record for the format by scoring 84 not out off 24 balls in his second (and final) game for the team that year which enabled his team to win by 7 wickets. Bairstow was purchased by the Punjab Kings at 6.75 crores during the 2022 IPL Auction. He was given a centrally contracted England player deal by Welsh Fire in The Hundred for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Jonny Bairstow the wicketkeeper for England feels that he was stitched up as a result of his controversial headbutt on Australia's Cameron Bancroft. A disgraceful stunt by South African cricket broadcasters during the second Test against England in Cape Town has generated controversy.
