The companies initially traded in silver cotton grain and other commodities. Ghanshyam Das Birla’s four sons Jugal Kishore Rameshwar Das Ghanshyam Das and Braj Mohan succeeded him. The most prosperous of the four brothers was Ghanshyam Das.

After the passing of his first wife G. D. Birla got married again. Lakshmi Nivas (son of his first wife Durga Devi) Krishna Kumar and Basant Kumar were his three sons (both sons of his second wife Mahadevi Birla). He has a great-grandson named Kumar Mangalam Birla.

GD Birla did his formal education only until the age of 11 after which he followed in his father Baldeodas's footsteps into the family's trading business in Mumbai and then Kolkata.

In his lifetime he had two marriages. Laxmi Niwas Sudarshan Kumar and Siddharth were his three sons from his first marriage to Durga Devi while K.K. 

Birla and Basant Kumar were his two sons from his second marriage to Maheshwari Devi. G. D. had two marriages because his first wife passed away when he was still a young man. Birla had one son (Lakshmi Nivas) from his second wife and two sons (Basant Kumar and Krishna Kumar) from his first wife.

Jugal Kishore the elder brother of Lakshmi Nivas adopted her and Kumar Mangalam Birla is Ghanshyam's great-grandson. On June 11 1983 Ghanshyam passed away in London. In addition he is honored with a monument in London's Golders Green Crematorium and a huge statue that overlooks the gardens.

After taking over the family firm GD Birla made efforts to further diversify it. Of them he is the ancestor of at least three modern family business organizations that are still operating in India. He wished to convert the moneylending enterprise into manufacturing out of all these firms. He next traveled to the Bengal Presidency the nation's top producer of jute specifically Calcutta. 

He started independently as a jute broker there. He founded Birla Jute Mills in 1918 much to the dismay of established European businessmen who were favored by the British government's biased policies rather than the neighborhood Bengali businessmen. 

The British and Scottish merchants tried to close down his business through unethical and monopolistic techniques but he was able to overcome the challenges. Birla's company soared after World War I causing supply issues across the British Empire.

The Birla Brothers Limited was established in 1919 with an investment of 5 million rupees. In that same year a mill was established in Gwalior. He was chosen to serve in British India's Central Legislative Assembly in 1926. He was elected the first president of the Harijan Sevak Sangh which Mahatma Gandhi had created in Delhi in 1932.

He entered the auto industry in the 1940s and founded Hindustan Motors. Birla made investments in tea and textiles after gaining independence through a succession of acquisitions of former European firms. He also grew and diversified into steel tubes cement chemicals and rayon.

The United Commercial Bank Limited was established to give form to Ghanshyam das Birla's vision of organizing a commercial bank with Indian capital and management during the Quit India Movement of 1942. One of the oldest and most important commercial banks in India is UCO Bank formerly known as United Commercial Bank. It was founded in Kolkata in 1943.
