Ashok SarafAshok Saraf is a well-known Indian film and television actor best known for performing in Marathi and Hindi films. Saraf is well-known for his comedic timing and has played various comedic roles throughout his career.

In addition to acting Saraf has produced several Marathi films including Dhum Dhadaka Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi and Zapatlela. He has also participated in numerous theatre productions and has acted in several plays.

Saraf is a veteran of the Marathi film industry having appeared in over 250 films. He is well-known for his dedication to his craft and is still active in the industry today. His contributions to cinema have earned him a special place in the hearts of his fans and admirers.

Childhood

Saraf was born on June 4 1947 in Bombay.  He grew up in the Chikhalwadi neighbourhood of South Mumbai and attended DGT Vidyalay for his education. He was given the nickname 'Ashok' after veteran actor Ashok Kumar.  He grew up in the Chikhalwadi neighbourhood of South Mumbai. He finished his education at DGT Vidyalaya in Mumbai.

Ashok Saraf was born and brought up in Mumbai Maharashtra India. He is married to Nivedita Saraf a well-known actress in Marathi cinema. The couple has a chef son named Aniket Saraf. Ashok Saraf was rumoured to be dating Marathi actress Ranjana Deshmukh. When the actress died in a car accident the affair became public.

In the 1970s and 1980s Ranjana Deshmukh (1955-March 3 2000) was a well-known Marathi actress best known by her stage name Ranjana. Ranjana shared box office success with a number of well-known Marathi cinema such as Ashok Saraf Avinash Masurekar Shriram Lagoo Kuldeep Pawar Nilu Phule Ravindra Mahajani Raja Gosavi and others. 

Ranjana Deshmukh's professional life was cut short in 1987 when she was killed in a car mishap on her way to Bangalore to film Jhanjhaar. The mishap paralysed Ranjana's legs. She had previously been engaged to Ashok Saraf. After her injury, she was in a play called Fakt Ekdaach.

Wife

Nivedita Saraf is well known for her acting and as the wife of the famous actor and comedian Ashok Saraf. They married at the Mangeshi Temple in Goa and Mangeshi Devi has been their Kuldaivat ever since.

Career

Ashok Saraf MoviesSaraf has been a film and television producer since 1969. He has appeared in over 250 Marathi films more than 100 of which were commercially successful. He has mostly worked in comedies. He has appeared in many Marathi films plays Hindi films TV serials and Hindi television series. In 1969 he began his career with the Marathi film Janaki.

During the 1970s and 1980s, he appeared in films such as Donhi Gharacha Pahuna Jawal Ye Laju Nako Tumacha Amacha Jamala Chimanrao Gundyabhau Deed Shahane Haldikunku Duniya Kari Salam and others. In Marathi films he worked with Laxmikant Berde Sachin and Mahesh Kothare.

During that time Marathi films adopted a new term for comedy. Saraf appeared in several Marathi films including Ashi Hi Banava Banavi Aayatya Gharat Gharoba Balache Baap Bramhachari Bhootacha Bhau and Dhum Dhadaka. Saraf has also appeared in a number of Marathi plays and Hindi serials. He then founded his own production company Aniket Telefilms which is run by his wife Nivedita Saraf.

Ashok Saraf had success with Laxmikant Berde another Marathi comedian who has also appeared in many Hindi features. Together with Saraf Sachin Pilgaonkar and Laxmikant Berde, they appeared in many Marathi features the majority of which were box office smashes.

Both Laxmikant and Ashok were pals with actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar and actor-producer-director Mahesh Kothare. In Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi (1988) he co-starred with the two reigning Marathi film giants Sachin Pilgaonkar and Laxmikant Berde. The film was a smash success.

Apart from the Marathi film career Saraf has also appeared in a number of Marathi plays throughout his tenure. Hamidabaichi Kothi Anadhikrut Manomilan He Ram Cardiogram Darling Darling Sarkha Chatit Dukhtay Laginghai and Vacuum Cleaner are some of the significant plays.

Saraf played important roles in Bollywood. Singham, Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya, Gupt Koyla, Yes Boss, Joru Ka Ghulam, and Karan Arjun are among the films in which he has played memorable roles. His work in films alongside powerful comedy actors such as Govinda Johny Lever and Kader Khan was lauded.

Saraf has also appeared in popular television shows such as Yeh Choti Badi Baatein and Hum Paanch (as Anand Mathur).  In the 1990s Ashok Saraf's comedy show Don't Worry Ho Jayega which aired on Sahara TV at the time was very popular. At the time the audience was very excited to see this show.

Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi (1988)

The film is a Marathi adaptation of Sailesh Dey's Bengali play Joymakali Boarding and an official remake of Sadan Sarkar's 1955 Bengali film of the same name.

The plot tracks the lives of four friends as they look for rented housing. Because the landlady only allows married couples two of the friends are forced to dress as women and pose as the spouses of the other two. Although Ashwini played a minor part in the film as a cosmetic store owner her effortless acting left an impression on the audience.

Ved is a 2022 Indian Marathi-language romantic drama film directed by Riteish Deshmukh and produced by Genelia D'Souza. Ashok Saraf and Jiya Shankar appear as extras.  It is a remake of Majili a 2019 Telugu-language romantic drama.

Mahesh Kothare directed and produced the 1985 Indian Marathi-language comedy film Dhum Dhadaka. Ashok Saraf Mahesh Kothare Laxmikant Berde Nivedita Joshi Surekha Rane Prema Kiran and Sharad Talwalkar star in the film.

The plot revolves around three young men who will go to any length to impress a wealthy industrialist so that he will approve their marriages. The film is a remake of the Tamil film Kaadhalikka Neramillai (1964) which had previously been remade in Telugu as Preminchi Choodu (1965) Hindi as Pyar Kiye Jaa (1966) and Kannada as Preethi Madu Thamashe Nodu (1979)
