Amrish Puri’s Death
On December 27 2004, Puri was taken to the Hinduja Hospital with myelodysplastic syndrome a rare kind of blood cancer. Puri underwent brain surgery to treat his illness.
He had to regularly have the blood that had built up in his cerebral part of the brain removed due to his condition and over time he eventually fell into a coma which he was in until just before his death on January 12 2005 about 7:30 a.m. His body was brought to his home so that mourners could pay their respects and his funeral was held at the Shivaji Park crematorium on January 13 2005.

Amrish Puri was born in pre-partition Lahore before Independence. He spent several years honing his acting abilities as a stage actor before making his debut in Indian cinema at the age of 40. He was adamant that if he had entered the television industry earlier it would have been a mistake and he would never have been half as successful.
After the partition Amrish Puri did not move to India by himself. He arrived here with his pals many of whom entered the sector and rose to prominence.
The actor who had spent his whole life performing on stage made the decision to enter the film industry after realising that if he kept doing so he would not be able to cover all of his expenses.
After failing his initial screen exam Amrish Puri went on to secure a different position. ESIC (Employee's State Insurance Corporation) was the name of the insurance provider.
In many of his films Amrish Puri may be seen sporting hats. It wasn't merely an accident. He was a huge fan of headgear. So much so that he has amassed more than 200 hats from all around the world.
But Amrish Puri was one of the very few people in his generation to graduate from college from Shimla and complete his studies. He was always keen to join the dramatics organisations at his school and in his college.
After failing his screen test he joined an insurance company as a senior division clerk a position he held for six years after breaking into the movie business. While working here he met his Wife Urmila.
