Amala Akkineni is a Bharatanatyam dancer and animal rights activist from India. She has primarily acted in Tamil films but she has also worked in Telugu Hindi Malayalam and Kannada. From 1986 to 1992 she was a leading actress in the Tamil cinema industry appearing in numerous blockbusters in Tamil and other languages.

 She has received two Filmfare Awards in South for Best Actress - Malayalam for the 1991 film Ulladakkam and Best Supporting Actress - Telugu for Life Is Beautiful in 2012. Amala is the co-founder of Blue Cross of Hyderabad a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Hyderabad India dedicated to animal care and the protection of animal rights.

Mythili Ennai Kaathali

T. Rajendar wrote directed and scored the 1986 Indian Tamil-language film Mythili Ennai Kaathali. Rajendar Srividya and Amala were featured in her feature debut. It was first released on February 4 1986. Manikkam adores Mythili but it is a one-sided affection. He looks up to a fiction writer named Mythili. After learning about his personal hardships she falls in love with him.

Velaikkaran

S. P. Muthuraman directed this 1987 Tamil-language action comedy film starring Rajinikanth Sarath Babu Amala and Pallavi. It is a remake of the Hindi film Namak Halaal from 1982. The movie was released on March 7 1987 and it was a box-office success. Due to the losses sustained by the producers as a result of Sri Raghavendra Rajinikanth acted without receiving any payment (1985).

Kodi Parakkuthu

Bharathiraja directed this 1988 Indian Tamil-language action film. The film stars Rajinikanth who reunited with Bharathiraja nearly a decade after their previous collaboration 16 Vayathinile (1977). With the help of a doppelganger a mafia lord attempts to assassinate police officer Sivagiri who raided his illegal companies. Later Sivagiri learns that the leader is to blame for his father's death.

Mappillai

Rajasekhar directed this 1989 Tamil-language masala film starring Rajinikanth Srividya and Amala. It is a remake of the 1989 Telugu film Attaku Yamudu Ammayiki Mogudu and Chiranjeevi who played the lead character in the original Telugu version made a special cameo in this film. 

The film garnered a great reception from the public and became a blockbuster after running for more than 200 days. 22 years later the film was remade in Tamil under the same title. Vyjayanthimala was first cast in the part of the protagonist's mother-in-law. However she declined the role which was thereafter offered to Srividya.

Oke Oka Jeevitham

It is a Dream Warrior Pictures-produced 2022 Indian science fiction melodrama film written and directed by newcomer Shree Karthick. The film is shot in both Telugu and Tamil with the latter titled Kanam (transl. Moment). Sharwanand Amala Akkineni and Ritu Varma star. In the Telugu version Vennela Kishore Priyadarshi and Nassar play supporting parts while Sathish and Ramesh Thilak replace the former two in the Tamil version.

The film's production began in August 2019 with principal photography taking place in Hyderabad and Chennai. The film wrapped in November 2020 after an 8-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was released in theatres on September 9 2022 to positive reviews from reviewers and performed well at the box office.

Amala Akkineni the wife of star Nagarjuna was detained in Hyderabad. The actress was arrested along with nine others for protesting against coal mining in forest regions. Amala participated in the demonstration as a Greenpeace activist near the historical monument Charminar. She was later released on personal bonds though.
