Oscars Details

History

The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on the 16th of May, 1929, at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, California. The ceremony was attended by around 270 people and was a relatively simple affair compared to the grand ceremonies of today. The Mayfair Hotel hosted the post-awards gathering. Tickets for attendees to the ceremony that evening cost $5.

In contrast to future events, a performer could be honoured for many films. Emil Jannings was named Best Actor for his performances in The Way of All Flesh and The Last Command. Janet Gaynor received recognition for three films. In addition, Charlie Chaplin and Warner Brothers received Honorary Awards. The first Oscars were not broadcasted.

At the first Oscars, 15 awards were presented in categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. The first Best Picture award went to the silent film Wings, which also won Best Engineering Effects. Just 15 minutes were spent on the ceremony. Three months before the first presentation, the winners were announced to the media. In 1930, the results of the second event were handed to newspapers for publication at 11:00 p.m. on the night of the awards. The same thing occurred for the remainder of the first decade.

Following the 1940 edition, the Academy began using a sealed envelope to reveal the winners' identities the following year, after the Los Angeles Times revealed the winners before the ceremony started in 1940. 

Over the years, the Oscars have undergone several changes, with the number of categories and award categories changing. In the early years, the awards were criticized for being too focused on the technical aspects of filmmaking and not enough on the artistic side. In response, the Academy added more categories to recognize the contributions of writers, actors, and other creative professionals. Today, the Oscars feature over 24 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress.

The Oscars have had a long and storied history, and some of the most memorable moments from the ceremony include Marlon Brando declining his Best Actor award for The Godfather in 1973 and Halle Berry becoming the first African-American woman to win Best Actress for Monster's Ball in 2002.

In recent years, the Oscars have faced criticism for lack of diversity in its nominations and winners. In 2015, the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite went viral on social media after the nominees for the major categories were all white for two years in a row. The Academy responded by launching a diversity and inclusion initiative aimed at increasing the representation of women and people of color in the film industry.

Trophy

The Oscar Statue, officially known as the Academy Award of Merit, is a symbol of excellence in the film industry. Standing 13.5 inches tall and weighing 8.5 pounds, the statuette is made of gold-plated bronze and depicts a knight holding a crusader's sword and standing on a film reel. The statuette was designed by Cedric Gibbons and first presented in 1929 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honor outstanding achievements in the film industry. In 1939, the Academy formally approved the name Oscar for the awards.

Oscar statuettes given at the ceremony contain blank baseplates to prevent information identifying the Oscar winners from leaking ahead of the event. Till 2010, winners had to return their statuettes to the Academy and wait many weeks for their names to be written on their particular Oscars. Since 2010, recipients have been able to have engraved nameplates added to their statue at an inscription-processing booth during the reception held immediately following the Oscar ceremony called Governor's Ball.

Before the ceremony, the R.S. Owens business had engraved nameplates manufactured with the identification of all potential winners. The non-winning nominees' nameplates are ultimately recycled.

Before 1950, Oscar statuettes were (and still are) the recipient's property. Ever since, the awards have been officially bound by the obligation that they are offered for sale back to the Academy for US$1. The Academy holds the trophy if the winner declines to accept this requirement. Prior to this arrangement, Academy Awards were sold for six figures in both public auctions and private transactions.

Nominations

The public has been informed of the Oscar nominations around the middle of January ever since 2004. The results were previously announced in early February. The nominations for 2021 were announced in March. For the first time since 2003, the nominees for 2022 were released in early February. 

India in Oscars

India has a rich history and culture, and its contributions to the world of cinema have been substantial. Indian films have been gaining recognition at the Oscars for several decades now, showcasing the talent and creativity of their filmmakers and actors.

The first Indian film to be nominated for an Academy Award was Mother India in 1957. Since then, several Indian films have been nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film category, including Lagaan (2001) and Salaam Bombay! (1988). In 2020, the Hindi film Gully Boy was India’s official entry to the Oscars, although it did not make it to the final list of nominations.

In addition to film nominations, Indian artists and technicians have also been recognized for their work in the sound, music, and special effects categories. For example, Resul Pookutty won an Oscar for Best Sound Mixing in 2009 for his work on the film Slumdog Millionaire.

Despite these achievements, Indian filmmakers face several challenges in getting recognition at the Oscars. The language barrier is one of the biggest obstacles, as most Indian films are produced in regional languages, making it difficult for non-Indian audiences to understand the content. However, the increasing popularity of Indian cinema around the world and the emergence of multilingual films may help bridge this gap in the future.

Additionally, RRR's nomination at the Oscars is a testament to the increasing global recognition of Indian cinema, which is becoming more and more recognized for its artistic and technical excellence. The performance by Ram Charan, N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt was highly appreciated by the audience. S. S. Rajamouli's work has brought Indian cinema to the globe's attention. The film's presence at the Oscars also serves to inspire young Indian filmmakers, who can now see that their work has the potential to receive international recognition.
