Janfest is an annual concert organized by The Indian Music Group of St Xavier’s College. The Indian Music Group was established in 1974 as a student organization to promote Indian Classical Music amongst the youth. It was founded by three students-Chandu Kapadia, Harish Kapadia, and Yusuf Gandhi, along with the then principal, Fr Lancy Pereira. They received guidance from the great tabla maestro, Ustad Allah Rakha.
The Indian Music Group initially organized small concerts and baithaks within St Xavier’s College and launched the first Janfest in 1975. Since then, Janfest has become one of the most prominent Indian Classical Music concerts in India.
Janfest has been graced by some of the greatest Indian Classical Musicians such as Pandit Ravi Shankar, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Rashid Khan and Dr N. Rajam.
