The Recording Academy of the United States presents the Grammy Awards, also known as the Grammys, to honour outstanding accomplishments in the music business. Many people consider them the most prestigious and vital honors in the global music industry. This is because the trophy features a golden gramophone. It was initially known as the Gramophone Awards.
The Grammy Honors, along with the Academy Prizes (for films), the Emmy Awards (for television), and the Tony Awards, are among the four prominent annual American entertainment awards. The Grammys are the first of the Big Three networks' major music awards to be presented yearly (for theater). On May 4, 1959, the first Grammy Awards ceremony was held to recognize the musical achievements of singers for the year 1958.

In the 1950s, the Hollywood Walk of Fame initiative gave birth to the Grammy Awards. The Walk of Fame committee's recording executives realized that many of the most influential figures in their sector would not receive a star on Hollywood Boulevard as they developed a list of notable recording industry members who might be eligible for a Walk of Fame star.
They decided to change this by developing industry-specific awards similar to the Oscars and the Emmys. It was unclear what to label these awards once it was decided to move forward with them. Eddie was one possible name after Thomas Edison, the phonograph's creator. The name was ultimately decided upon following a mail-in contest in which over 300 entrants submitted the name Grammy, with the oldest postmark coming from the contest winner Jay Danna of New Orleans, Louisiana, as an acronym for Emile Berliner's invention, the phonograph. In 1958, the first Grammys were given out for accomplishments.
On May 4, 1959, two award ceremonies were conducted concurrently at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City, New York, and 28 Grammys were given out. Over the years, categories were added and abolished, and the number of prizes handed increased, once exceeding 100. The first ceremony to be shown on television was the second Grammy Awards, which were also held in 1959. However, the ceremony was not broadcast live until the 13th Annual Grammy Awards in 1971.

Recordings may be nominated for consideration by NARAS members, including both media organizations and individual members. Online entry forms are used to submit entries. Over 150 recording industry professionals participate in review sessions after a piece is submitted to ensure that it has been placed in the appropriate category.
The resulting lists of qualified entries are then distributed to voting members, each of whom may cast a vote to nominate in up to nine of the other 30 categories in addition to the general categories (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist). Each category's nominees are the five recordings that receive the most votes; in other categories (such as craft and specialty categories), the final five candidates are chosen by review committees. If there is a tie during the nomination process, there may be more than five nominees.
While Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences members are typically invited to screenings or sent DVDs of movies nominated for an Oscar, NARAS members only have access to a private online listening service.
The gilded gramophone-themed gold-plated awards are handcrafted and put together by Billings Artworks in Ridgway, Colorado. The original Grammy design was updated in 1990, replacing the traditional soft lead with a more durable alloy and enlarging and upgrading the trophy.
Billings created the zinc alloy Grammium, which they trademarked. Each year, stunt trophies are used for the event broadcast because personalized awards bearing each recipient's name are available after the awards announcements. Approximately 7,578 Grammy trophies had been given out as of February 2009.
