Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, and Bobby Deol play the main characters in Samir Karnik's 2011 Hindi-language action comedy Yamla Pagla Deewana alongside Johnny Lever, Anupam Kher, Mehak Chahal and Sucheta Khanna supporting them. Following Apne, the movie is the Deol family's second collaboration (2007). The song "Main Jat Yamla Pagla Deewana" from the 1975 movie Pratigya, which also starred Dharmendra, served as the inspiration for the title of the movie. The movie's theatrical trailer debuted on November 5, 2010, and it was released on January 14, 2011, to positive reviews. It ended up being a box office success. It is the opening chapter in the Yamla Pagla Deewana movie series and the eleventh-highest grossing Bollywood movie of 2011.
In Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, NRI Paramvir Singh (Sunny Deol), his Canadian wife Mary (Emma Brown Garett), their two children Karam and Veer, and his mother Nafisa Ali live peacefully. Gajodhar's younger brother, Paramvir, was born years ago, but due to family issues, Paramvir's father, Dharam Singh (Dharmendra), fled the house and took Gajodhar with him. Back in the present, a Canadian pays Paramvir a visit at his house and notices Dharam Singh's picture. The Canadian knows Dharam as a criminal because he robbed him while he was on tour in Banaras. When Paramvir's mother learns of this, she sends him to Banaras to look for his father and younger brother.
When Paramvir arrives in Banaras, he runs upon a kid who connives to rob him of all of his money. In search of assistance, Paramvir ends himself at a bar when he runs into Dharam Singh and their older brother Gajodhar Singh (Bobby Deol). Gajodhar had earlier fooled Paramvir, who now realises this and is unhappy to learn that both his father and brother are con artists. When Paramvir notices Dharam by himself, he approaches him and reveals his identity. Dharam, however, declines to accept him as his son. Gajodhar likes Paramvir and takes him into their team after he soon saves him from a goon attack; however, Gajodhar is unaware that Paramvir is his older brother.
Gajodhar develops feelings for Saheba (Kulraj Randhawa), a Punjabi author, at this time. He starts dating her after getting her attention from Dharam and Paramvir. Soon after, Saheba's ruthless brothers learn of it, beat Gajodhar to a pulp, and then transport Saheba back to Punjab. Gajodhar and Paramvir come to Punjab to win back Gajodhar's love after Dharam loses all hope for him and breaks out, asking Paramvir for help and admitting that he is his father but cautioning him not to tell Gajodhar about it.
Her other brothers and older brother Joginder Singh (Anupam Kher), a harsh local landlord, desire Saheba to wed an NRI. When Paramvir learns this, he dresses Gajodhar up to make him appear Punjabi, and the two of them head over to Saheba's residence where Gajodhar poses as an NRI named Karamveer. On the other hand, Joginder has a fierce opponent named Minty who wants to succeed him and opposes him winning the forthcoming elections. After meeting both of them, Joginder determines they will wed their sister to Paramvir rather than Gajodhar. Paramvir is already a married man, though. Joginder likes Paramvir even more after he gets drunk and beats Saheba's brothers one night.
So Paramvir instructs Gajodhar to leave one night with Saheba.
Gajodhar and Saheba are about to flee when Dharam arrives with a band of musicians to stop them. Dharam believes Gajodhar is the one getting married but is unaware that Saheba's family has selected Paramvir. Gajodhar and Paramvir are informed by Dharam that Paramvir should be the one fleeing. Paramvir then tries to leave for the market, but Poli stops him and pulls him back, leading Joginder to believe that Dharam and Gajodhar are making fun of him for being afraid of marriage when in fact, Paramvir is standing right behind them.
Gajodhar and Saheba resolve to flee the very night after Gajodhar and Poli are wedded to Gajodhar by Joginder. They fail once more when Mary, the husband of Paramvir, arrives with their sons Veer and Karam. Gajodhar, Dharam, and Paramvir invent the tale that she is their neighbour in Canada and that her husband, Paramvir, went missing the previous year. Mary is aware that Paramvir is in her immediate vicinity, but she decides not to say anything for fear of jeopardising the entire scheme.
Having discovered what has been going on all along, Joginder orders his troops to attack Paramvir, Gajodhar, and Dharam. Prior to Minty and his guys arriving, Paramvir and Dharam beat up his men. Gajodhar saves Joginder just as Minty is ready to attack him, gaining him permission to wed Saheba. Dharam, Gajodhar, Paramvir, Mary, Saheba, Karam, and Veer ultimately emigrate to Canada where they live as a single, content family.
