The narrative follows the life of India's mythical king of Ujjaini, Vikramaditya, also known as Vikram to his subjects. Along with the primarily legendary tales told by Betaal, it focuses on the private life and exploits of the great king Vikramaditya. When Vikram was unable to respond to the final query, he escorted the Betaal to the palace where they both faced Bhadrakaal and the 32 putlis that he had dispatched.

Vikram became the deserving heir to the singhasan Battisi after he slew Bhadrakaal and granted Mukti to all the putlis. Vikramaditya was a famous monarch who governed from his capital at Ujjain over a thriving realm. He was incredibly passionate about both study and exploration. He had a strong will, was brave, and showed no fear. The monarch used to get several gifts each day from visitors who came to see him. Previously, the King always extended the same courtesy when accepting gifts. One of these guests was a mendicant who gave the monarch fruit at each of his visits. The fruit used to be given to the royal storekeeper by King Vikramaditya.When handling the fruit one day, it broke, and a useful ball of ruby emerged from the top. The King was taken aback. A magnificent ruby was discovered among all the fruits after he gave the order to check them all. The King made the choice to talk to the beggar.

The mendicant had, however, stipulated that the King must meet him at night on the fourteenth day of the dark half of the month under a Banyan tree in the middle of the cremation site outside the city. King greeted him as planned. The mendicant was questioned by the King about his actions. The mendicant claims that there is a task that Vikramaditya, a King, alone is capable of doing.

To find a very old tree, King Vikramaditya had to travel to the ground's far northernmost corner. A dead body would be dangling from one of its branches. He would have to go acquire it for the man on the street because the man on the street was looking for occult powers that he could only obtain if a king delivered him this specific body and if he performed certain rituals while sitting on it.

King Vikramaditya was reportedly compelled to take a Betaal body from a treetop and carry it silently to another location in order to fulfil a vow.

The monarch would listen to the spirit of Betaal (who was in the corpse) while he told him a narrative along the way, and when Betaal finished, he would ask a question, and if the king knew the answer, he was obligated to answer or else Betaal would smash his head into a thousand pieces. However, if he speaks, he will violate the quiet vow, and Betaal will fly back to the treetop, leaving the king a few feet from his destination! The king would retrace his steps and pursue the vampire. And the list goes on and on. The Betaal told King 25 stories, as suggested by the name Betaal Pachisi. (The Hindi word Pachisi is derived from the Hindi word "Pachis," which signifies twenty-five.)

However, Betaal eventually revealed the genuine intent of the beggar after observing king Vikramaditya's resolve. The mendicant intended to perform certain rituals while seated on Betaal, but he also intended to assassinate the King in order to obtain all of the world's power. Vikramaditya became suspicious as a result of this. He nevertheless went to the beggar, but he was expecting a surprise. Betaal was correct, and the mendicant attempted to murder Vikramaditya. Vikramaditya, however, outsmarted the beggar and murdered him.
