Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Farhan Akhtar, and Ritesh Sidhwani are the producers of the sports drama movie Toofaan, which released in 2021 on Amazon Prime Video. Farhan Akhtar, Mrunal Thakur, and Paresh Rawal co-star in this Mehra-directed film. It also stars Supriya Pathak, Sonali Kulkarni and Vijay Raaz in supporting roles.
In Dongri, Aziz Ali (Farhan Akhtar), an orphaned extortionist, beats up shops in exchange for money. He gets into a fight and visits a hospital, where Ananya Prabhu (Mrunal Thakur), the doctor, calls him out for being an extortionist. Ali decides to start boxing after watching a Muhammad Ali DVD at a nearby boxing gym one day.
He enrols in Coach Nana Prabhu's (Paresh Rawal) boxing programme but loses a fight due to poor technique. When he returns to the hospital, Ananya is understanding when she finds out that he was caring for and purchasing gifts for orphaned children, but she is less understanding when she subsequently witnesses him assaulting a person on the street. She queries him about his desire to be a gangster or a boxer when he confronts her. After leaving his extortionist career, he makes the decision to return to Nana's boxing school and starts training.
He eventually obtains his boxing licence, wins fights, and Nana gives him the nickname "Toofaan." Additionally, he starts dating Ananya, and when Nana learns about it, he reprimands him brutally because he believes Aziz is tricking his daughter Ananya. In addition, he is enraged that Aziz, a Muslim, is dating a Hindu. Ananya is asked to leave Nana's house. Aziz and Ananya begin their search for housing but struggle to live together due to their two different religious beliefs. Aziz is unwilling to take on his old boss's mafia persona in order for them to stay in the sole house that is available to them. Ananya instead checks into a hostel for women.
Aziz receives a significant quantity of money to lose at his next boxing battle, which he accepts. After being discovered, he is given a five-year boxing suspension. Following their reconciliation, they get married and have a daughter they call Myra. However, Nana cuts off their conversation and states that she doesn't want to meet the child. Five years later, Aziz is very much an unsuitable father to Myra and has received his boxing reinstatement letter. However, he trashes the letter because he does not want to start boxing again. Ananya sneaks up behind him and obtains his new boxing licence after he informs her that he does not want to resume boxing.
Ananya passes away in a stampede at the foot-over-bridge at the train station on the way back. Aziz makes the decision to pick up boxing again and get in shape after seeing his boxing licence to realise Ananya's desire. After Ananya's passing, Nana starts to spend much more time with Myra. Aziz gets back in shape and wins a few battles, but in one, the judge, Darmesh Patil (Darshan Kumar), a former state champion who Aziz had previously defeated, buys the referee's silence by using a series of illegal punches delivered under the belt to gain the upper hand.
Nana then meets Dharmesh and secretly records the conversation where he admits to bribing the referees which causes him to be fired from the Boxing Federation. The next time Aziz fights, he goes up against Prithvi Singh (Gaganpreet Sharma), a well-known boxer who has a reputation for sending his competitors to the icu before the second round even starts. Aziz initially starts on a losing streak but when Nana returns to coach Aziz and persuades him to fight the match for Ananya, Aziz turns things around and wins, thus ending the story.
Toofan received mixed reviews from both audiences and critics, with people praising Farhan Akhtar's performance but also criticising the predictable storyline of the movie.
