Akshaye Khanna plays the protagonist character in Ken Ghosh's 2021 Hindi-language production State of Siege: Temple Attack which also stars Mir Sarwar, Abhimanyu Singh, Praateek Dogra, Gautam Rode and Vivek Dahiya in important roles. For ZEE5, it was produced as a direct-to-video movie. It is based on the assault on the Akshardham Temple in 2002 and the subsequent killing spree of the attackers. This State of Siege is a standalone sequel to State of Siege:26/11

The plot revolves around Major Hanut Singh and his personal and professional turmoils. Major's group takes part in a mission to save a minister's daughter in 2001. During this expedition, his closest friend is assassinated, which haunts him throughout the rest of his life. The year after, terrorists from Pakistan strike and occupy a Gujarati temple. Singh and the National Security Guard defeat the terrorists and win back the temple.

State of Siege: Temple Attack was praised for depicting the struggles NSG Commandos go through during their operations. Although the movie was criticised for straying away from the real incident of the Gujarat Temple Attack as the movie progresses, the audience praised Akshaye Khanna's performance and called it one of his best works in recent times.
