Romeo Juliet is a 1996 romantic crime movie that Baz Luhrmann co-wrote, produced, and directed. It is a contemporary adaptation of the eponymous play by William Shakespeare. The movie's lead actors, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, play two teens who fall in love despite coming from rival families. Additionally starring in supporting parts are Brian Dennehy, John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino, Mario Cimarro, and Diane Venora.

The Capulets and Montagues are two competing business dynasties in Verona Beach. Younger kin is affected by the hostility of the older generation, which includes Ted and Caroline Montague and Fulgencio and Gloria Capulet. There is mayhem in the city as a result of a gunfight between the Montagues, led by Romeo's cousin Benvolio, and the Capulets, led by Juliet's cousin Tybalt. Since this is the third civil altercation, Captain Prince, the chief of police, chastises the families and informs them that their lives "will pay the forfeit of the peace" if a similar incident occurs again.

The following evening, Benvolio and Romeo discover about a Capulet party and resolve to interrupt it. Romeo agrees upon learning that his beloved Rosaline, with whom he is infatuated, will be attending. Romeo takes ecstasy as they travel to the Capulet home after they run across their friend Mercutio, who has party tickets. Romeo enters the bathroom as the effects of the drug and the party overwhelm him. He meets Juliet there, and the two fall in love right away, not knowing who the other is. Romeo is seen by Tybalt, who threatens to murder him for breaking into his family's house.

Romeo leaves the celebration after learning that he and Juliet come from rival families, but he goes back to see her. Juliet informs him that they will be engaged if he responds by the following day. Romeo approaches Father Laurence the following day and requests that they be married. Through Juliet's nurse, Romeo spreads the news, and they soon get married.

At the shore, Tybalt runs into Mercutio and Romeo. Romeo makes peace-making efforts, but Tybalt attacks him. Intervening, Mercutio beats Tybalt and is about to murder him when Romeo intervenes. Mercutio curses both houses before he is severely wounded by Tybalt, who seizes the chance to do so. Tybalt is on the run when Romeo pursues him and shoots him to death as retaliation for Mercutio's murder.

Romeo is exiled from the city by Captain Prince, and he hides out with Father Laurence. When the nurse arrives, she informs him that Juliet is standing by. Romeo scales Juliet's balcony, they have their wedding, and Romeo leaves shortly after. Fulgencio, in the meantime, determines Juliet will wed Dave Paris, a governor's son.

Gloria tells Juliet that she will marry Paris the next morning. If Juliet rejects, Fulgencio threatens to disown her. Juliet flees and finds Father Laurence, pleading with him to assist her and threatening to kill herself. Father Laurence gives her a potion that will help her fake her own death, following which she will be deposited within the Capulet vault to awaken 24 hours later. Romeo makes a promise to Father Laurence to reveal the plan in a letter, after which Romeo will break into the vault and, after being reunited with Juliet, the two will flee to Mantua. Romeo, who did not see the letter when it was delivered and who now thinks Juliet is dead, purchases a bottle of poison from an apothecary.

Just as Juliet awakens, Romeo enters the church where she is unconscious and eats the poison. Juliet picks up Romeo's gun and kills herself in the head after learning of his passing, then collapses next to his lifeless body. The parents of Romeo and Juliet arrive at the scene as Romeo's body is being transported into an ambulance while a mob of onlookers and reporters watch the incident from behind the police line. Captain Prince confronts the boys' dads and chastises them for the deaths of his kin that resulted from their foolish altercation.
