Robbie Grewal is the writer and director of the 2019 Indian Hindi-language action thriller film Romeo Akbar Walter (RAW; referencing the Research and Analysis Wing). John Abraham, Mouni Roy, Jackie Shroff, Anil George ,and Sikandar Kher are the film's stars. The story revolves around a banker who is chosen by the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW or RAW) to be a spy in an undercover mission in Pakistan, where he must overcome both physical and emotional obstacles. On April 5, 2019, the movie, which was based on the life of Indian spy Ravindra Kaushik, was premiered in theatres.
At the ISI detention cell in Karachi in November 1971, a man is being tortured to the third degree. The narrative then jumps back nine months.
Rehamatullah Ali, also known as Romeo, a banker, is hired by Shrikant Rai, the head of the RAW, in 1971 after he successfully foils a bank robbery that the RAW agents orchestrated to test his aptitude for espionage in Pakistan. He heads to Pakistan after receiving instruction in stealth communication methods and fighting.
He adopts the alias Akbar Malik while living in Pakistan, and Joker and Mudassar, two local Pakistanis working with RAW, support him in his operations. Planned events lead him closer to his target, Isaq Afridi (Anil George), whose faith in him grows as Akbar informs him of his hatred for India and protects him from an attack carried out by Nawab Afridi's goons. Akbar alerts RAW of a planned attack on Badlipur that would result in the deaths of innocent people in both East Pakistan and India. Afridi, however, refuses to betray Akbar when the Nawab approaches him with an offer to work for him as their relationship grows closer.
Nawab, however, forgets an envelope as they are leaving the rendezvous and requests Akbar to deliver it to the specified room number. He shouts, "You?" in shock, upon seeing his girlfriend Shraddha Sharma there. She motions for him to be quiet and reveals a spy transmitter within a phone receiver to prove that her room has been bugged. She reveals that she was working for the RAW as well and that Akbar requested that a family member be sent for him.
While this is going on, Colonel Khan becomes increasingly suspicious of Akbar, whom he then arrests, interrogates, and tortures when he is unable to elicit any information from. Due to Akbar being Afridi's right hand, he is compelled to release. Akbar and the colonel then engage in a chase after their cover is quickly compromised. After escaping, Akbar returns home to find Mudassar urging him to leave. Mudassar accepts after Akbar explains that there is no way out, so he goes to make tea for him. While they are both waiting, Akbar feels someone is there. When he hears a gun clock, he grabs the gun Mudassar had given him for emergencies and shoots the person, only to realise it was Mudassar.
He flees the scene while sobbing, but he also keeps in mind Shrikant's advice to stay out of relationships and approaches him the following day in the disguise of an army captain. The latter declines, remarking that he is no longer acting in Indian fashion. While Joker commits suicide, Shraddha and a few other RAW agents are detained. The truth is subsequently revealed when Akbar meets the army officer who questioned him and his superior. He chooses to carry out the assaults on Badlipur himself as retaliation against the RAW. Akbar surprises him by exploding the entire village in a sequence of blasts, thereby proving his commitment to Pakistan, while being accompanied by colonel Khan to avoid any form of double-crossing.
The Indo-Pakistani War subsequently starts. After ten years, Shrikant and Awasthi encounter Akbar, who is now an officer in Pakistan by the name of Walter Khan. He leaves after speaking briefly and congratulating Awasthi on his upcoming promotion, which surprises the latter. Then Shrikant discloses that Walter is still a double agent for India and that aligning with Pakistan was all a part of the master plan. The bombing didn't result in any fatalities since the villagers were evacuated 24 hours beforehand under the guise of a weather alert.
Shrikant further discloses that Walter's devotion to his job was the only factor in his inability to attend his mother's burial. With tears in his eyes, Walter is shown saluting the Indian flag as the movie comes to a close.
