Aditya Chopra and his father Yash Chopra co-produced the 2008 romantic comedy Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi under the company of Yash Raj Films. It was written, directed, and produced in Hindi. In addition to Bobby Bedii, Vinay Pathak and Rushad Rana who play supporting parts, the movie stars Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma, who made her acting debut.

An office worker for Punjab Power named Surinder Sahni (Shah Rukh Khan) attends Taani Gupta's (Anushka Sharma) wedding. Taani is the upbeat daughter of Professor Shirish Gupta (M. K. Raina), whose student he once was. He has a love-at-first-sight moment with her there but is unable to articulate it. Unfortunately, Taani's fiancé and his entire family pass away in a car accident, leaving Professor Gupta inconsolable and suffering a severe heart attack. Upon being admitted to a hospital, he declares his final wish for Surinder and Taani to get married. As much as Surinder already cares about Taani, she readily grants Professor Gupta's final demand.

After Professor Gupta passes away, Surinder and Taani have an impromptu wedding and take Taani to his family's home in Amritsar, Punjab. Once there, he starts to treat her with kindness and respect; he even gives her the run of his bedroom and sleeps in the attic, but he is too afraid to tell her he loves her. She promises to be a good wife and respects her position in Surinder's life that evening, but she declares that she will never be able to love him or anyone else again. He appreciates her concern for him as she starts making breakfast for him the following morning.

Later, Taani discovers a poster for a dancing contest in Amritsar and asks Surinder if she may participate; he readily accepts and even assists her with the entry costs. Following that, Surinder seeks the grooming counsel of his friend Balwinder, also known as Bobby Khosla (Vinay Pathak), the proprietor of a hair salon, in an effort to win Taani's heart. Bobby gives Surinder a full makeover, ordering him to stop wearing his glasses, shaving off his moustache, changing the style of his hair to a trendy spiky cut, and dressing him in unique Western attire, aviator-style sunglasses, and oversized pastel contact lenses. He then changes into "Raj Kapoor," a boisterous and jovial boy, and proceeds to the location of the dancing competition.

Raj participates in the competition, and at the conclusion of class, all of the competitors are divided into two groups using random numbers: Group Green and Group Red. Raj and Taani end up dancing together since they share the same number, "21," by coincidence. Raj tries to paint Taani with "cool" pictures of heroes, and when she promises him that they would undoubtedly win the competition if they practise their dance as much as they can, Raj makes fun of Surinder in an effort to earn her love.

A few days later, on his birthday, Raj spends the entire day with Taani. That evening, he declares his love to her by harnessing the power of his electric company to make the lights of Amritsar spell out "I Love You." Despite Raj's assurance that they can still be friends even if she doesn't feel the same way about him, Taani is stunned and finds herself in a difficult situation. He is perplexed when she requests him to leave her alone for a while. Surinder is also in a pickle because he is unable to reveal his identity to Taani. He follows Bobby's advise to approach her as "Surinder," rather than Raj, to win her love.

One evening, Taani is accompanied by Surinder to a trade show where he competes in a Sumo wrestling match for a chance to win two round-trip tickets to Japan. Despite being seriously hurt, he eventually succeeds in defeating the enormous Sumo wrestler. Taani is taken aback by this and, while she attends to Surinder's wounds at home, asks him why he did this. She also begs him to stop caring for her because she won't be able to pay him back. Since Taani cannot see him in his true form and instead sees Raj, Surinder is sad since he knows that true love cannot be returned.

The following day, Surinder and Taani visit the Golden Temple to ask God for his blessings on her performance, both publicly and internally, as well as on her life without Raj. While there, Taani claims that God gave her a sign indicating that Surinder and her marriage are divinely inspired. She thinks about Surinder for the first time and discovers his strength and honesty, two qualities that she comes to adore. That evening, she informs Raj that she cannot pick him over Surinder since doing so would be the same as turning away from God. Raj is secretly relieved that Taani likes his "true-self" and has tears in his eyes.

Taani is astonished to see Surinder join her on stage when it's time for their performance rather than Raj. Through a sequence of flashbacks while they are dancing, she realises that he is Raj after all. Taani confronts Surinder emotionally backstage after their performance, and he admits that he "loves her more than God." She acknowledges that she feels the same way, and they embrace. The movie closes with the line "There is an exceptional love story in every average couple" and Surinder and Taani winning the tournament.

Rab Ne Bana DI Jodi was not marketed heavily as it was scheduled to release post the 26/11 Attacks on Mumbai and the filmmakers weren't sure if it would be worth putting in so much money into marketing but the film went on to become a blockbuster hit, smashing various records in the process and even becoming the highest grossing film of the year overseas.
