Alok Nath, Dalip Tahil, Goga Kapoor, and Makrand Deshpande play supporting roles. The movie debuted on April 29, 1988. The storyline was a contemporary retelling of old-fashioned tragic love tragedies like Laila and Majnu, Heer Ranjha, and Romeo and Juliet.
Brothers Thakur Jaswant and Dhanraj Singh are farmers in the Dhanakpur village. Ratan, the youngest child of Thakur Raghuvir Singh from a wealthy Rajput family, dumped their younger sister Madhumati or Madhu and got her pregnant. After Ratan refutes Jaswant's accusations, the family decides against Madhu's marriage to the engaged man, who is Ratan. However, his mother subsequently reveals to Raghuvir that she had secretly overheard Madhu make the accusations to Ratan in front of their home, and she begs him to wed them. He declines right away, informing her that their daughter-in-law ruining their family's honour is an unmarried pregnant girl.
Jaswant decides to leave the village in order to sell their farm and see if they can move to Delhi, where their other sister Parvati lives with her husband Bhagwandas and son Shyam. Jaswant realises the extreme humiliation and shame their family will experience because Madhu's lover will marry someone else, especially after he impregnated her. Madhu kills herself out of depression over losing her beloved and the shame he will cause her family. Infuriated, Dhanraj kills Ratan at his wedding after bringing her body there. He is being held. The two families are now adversaries. After relocating to Delhi with Dhanraj's wife Saroj and their child, Jaswant successfully launches a clothing company with the aid of Bhagwandas and raises Raj.
Raj, a passionate music enthusiast who completes his schooling at Rajput College, writes a letter to his father Dhanraj. He infiltrates Raj's college departure celebration and is happy to see him achieve his goals. Following the celebration, Raj and his cousin Shyam, who also finished school there, emotionally reconcile with him and take him home, where he also reconciles with the rest of his family. Now that Raj, Shyam, and Dhanraj have joined Bhagwandas and Jaswant's company, their success is increased. Raj unexpectedly travels to Dhanakpur with Shyam to bring a lawsuit against Raghuvir's older son Thakur Randhir Singh. He is drawn to Rashmi, Randhir's lovely daughter, as he travels home.
That evening, he sneaks into her birthday celebration with a hesitant Shyam in order to see her. He pretends to be Thakur Pratap Singh's son, Roop Singh, who Randhir's friend wants her to marry. After becoming thrilled to 'see' Randhir after a while, Raj unwillingly meets with him. Randhir rejects the arrival of the actual Roop Singh and, as a result, Raj and Shyam escape, much to Randhir's ire. He then learns through his manager that the person who had come to file a business case against him was actually Dhanraj's son, shocking both his mother and Rashmi. At their second encounter, Raj and Rashmi fell in love. Raj finds out about her family but is hesitant to be completely honest with her.
She informs Dhanraj that she is Thakur Randhir's daughter and is from Dhanakpur after having dinner with him, Shyam, Dhanraj, and Saroj. He confesses to killing her uncle out of frustration, he tells her. Raj also reveals to her that he attempted to forget her after learning of her identity but couldn't since he was madly in love with her, which surprises her. Saddened, she and Raj exchange a tearful goodbye. Even after he grudgingly makes a vow to his family that he will forget her when they confront him for loving an enemy, they continue to meet in secret back in Delhi. After overhearing their phone call at their home one day, Randhir learns about them after seeing them together at her college and arranges for her wedding to Roop Singh.
At their home, he tells Parvati, Saroj, and Jaswant that if Raj attempts to see her again, he would murder him. After Raj claims that he met her to terminate their relationship, Jaswant confronts Raj about it and agrees not to tell Dhanraj anything. She becomes engaged to Roop Singh when Randhir beats him up and kicks him out of their home after he warns him, and no matter what happens, he and his father are unable to stay apart. Raj is devastated by her engagement and sobs in his father's arms because he feels guilty for liking their foe. Later on though, she runs away from home with the aid of her friend Kavita, and Raj prepares to do the same with Shyam's assistance.
In pursuit of their idealised life together, Raj and Rashmi abandon their family and elope. They remain there, content in their little paradise, in an abandoned fort. Randhir, who is enraged, publishes Raj's photograph in the press along with a hefty reward if he can be located, but he withholds Rashmi's identity for fear of the negative publicity it will bring their family. Dhanraj cautions him that if he hurts Raj after seeing his photo, he will unwittingly revert to the murderer Dhanraj he once was. Randhir, his brother-in-law, and his nephew Balwant hire assassins to assassinate Raj after finding out where they are. His mother learns about this and rushes to Raj's home to plead with his family to save them. In order to fetch firewood for their home, Raj departs. Balwant, Randhir's brother-in-law, joins them.
Rashmi, who is ignorant of the truth, is ecstatic at Randhir's remarks. Raj is being pursued by the thugs. When Dhanraj, Jaswant, Shyam, and Randhir's mother arrive to the fort, they inquire about Raj's whereabouts. Rashmi departs to check on Raj's wellbeing. The henchman shoots Rashmi twice as he is going to shoot the victim. Raj is shocked and grieving when she passes away as he is holding her.
Raj stabs himself to death and passes away next to Rashmi. The lovers are together, never to be parted, as the sun sets behind them in the final scene, with both families heading in their direction.
