Pournami is a Hindi movie about a dancer who prepares for an occasion where she must perform a unique dance in the temple of Lord Shiva. Her younger sister Chandrakala, however, decides to study the dance under the guidance of a stranger  when her elder sister vanishes without a trace.

The 1950s setting of the movie depicts a long-lasting drought in a small Andhra Pradesh village. Veda Sastry, a woman from a traditional household, dances in Lord Shiva's temple to beg Shiva to grant their village rain. Before she passes away from weariness after dancing nonstop for seven days and nights. 

The community finally receives rain, ending the protracted drought. Since then, the village has made it customary for a girl from the dancer's family to perform in Shiva's temple on that auspicious day once every 12 years.It is Pournami who is supposed to dance this year but she suddenly disappears leading to the main plot of the movie.
