The political action movie Nayak: The Real Hero was released in 2001 in Hindi and was directed by S. Shankar and produced by A. M. Rathnam under the Sri Surya Movies label. Anil Kapoor plays the lead character in the movie; other cast members include Rani Mukerji, Amrish Puri, Shivaji Satam, Paresh Rawal, Khyaati Keswani and Johnny Lever. It is a remake of Shankar's Mudhalvan from 1999, which was released in Tamil. The story revolves around Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, a television cameraman and later presenter, who inadvertently overhears and records the police asking Maharashtra Chief Minister Balraj Chauhan to take a neutral stance during riots brought on by a fight between university students and a driver. Shivaji receives a challenge to take over Chauhan's position for a day while questioning him about the problems, which he accepts reluctantly.

Bansal helps Shivaji deal with challenges that the public faces on a daily basis. He oversees finding the needy suitable housing and jobs, and he dismisses ineffective and dishonest government officials. Rao has Chauhan detained as his final deed of the day because Chauhan is the source of all the corruption. Chauhan later secures bail and is released from custody before passing an ordinance that invalidates all of Shivaji's instructions. Chauhan sends assassins to pursue Shivaji after being offended by his success, but they only manage to wreck his house.

When he was a cameraman, Shivaji encountered Manjari, a naive, carefree villager, and fell in love with her. Shivaji begs her father to marry them, but the woman's father declines on the grounds that Shivaji is not a government official. Shivaji thus starts getting ready for the Civil Services Exam. However, when Bansal gets there, he tells Rao that Shivaji's support for becoming the next chief minister has soared. At first, he is reluctant, but after Chauhan's goons vandalise QTV locations to frighten him and the public shows their support by swarming to his location in large numbers, he accepts.

In the subsequent state elections, Shivaji triumphs with a resounding victory. Chauhan loses because his political allies turn against him. Infuriated by Shivaji's choice and fearing that it will make Shivaji less considerate of Manjari, Manjari's father forbids his daughter from getting married to him. Shivaji makes numerous reforms after taking office as chief minister and immediately gains popularity among the populace. However, Chauhan, who employs his minions to try to assassinate him or damage his reputation as a national hero, constantly poses a threat to his rising popularity. A bomb is exploded at Shivaji's home, killing his parents, after an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate him by hiring an assassin.

Chauhan instructs Pandurang to detonate bombs throughout the city as a last-ditch effort. By chance, a priest learns that a group of men are preparing to set off bombs and informs Shivaji's office via the "complaint box," which Shivaji established to receive letters from the people about their grievances. When Shivaji and his secretary question Pandurang tactfully, Pandurang confesses the whereabouts of the four bombs. Three of the bombs can be disarmed by a squad, but the fourth goes off without anyone being hurt before they can get to it.

By putting the blame for the explosion on Shivaji, Chauhan utilises this triumph against him. Seeing no other option, Shivaji calls Chauhan to the secretariat and fabricates a scenario in which Chauhan attempted to shoot Shivaji but was unsuccessful. To do this, Shivaji picks up a gun, puts it at his arm, and purposefully shoots himself before giving the rifle to Chauhan. Chauhan, who is furious, makes an effort to shoot Shivaji, but his bullet misses. Chauhan is killed by the security guards after they shot him. In addition, Manjari's father accepts Shivaji's proposal of marriage after realising that he is a magnificent man who puts duty before all else. The state is growing under Shivaji's leadership as the movie comes to a close.
