Mahabharat is a 2013 Indian drama television series based on the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. It aired from 16 September 2013 to 16 August 2014 on Star Plus.

The serial is based on the book "Mahabharata" written by Vyasa, a revered sage in the Hindu religion. It narrates the struggles between two groups of cousins, Kaurava and Pandava and their successors in the Kurukshetra War.


The story begins with Bhishma, played by Aarav Chowdhary trying to convince Satyavati, played by Sayantani Ghosh to marry his father Shantanu, played by Sameer Dharmadhikari, who is the king of Hastinapur. 


Satyavati agrees to marry Shantanu and they have 2 children together - Chitrangada and Vichitravirya. Both of them die without any children and Satyavati requests Veda Vyasa, born through occult to impregnate Vichitravirya's 2 wives Ambika and Ambalika the same way he was conceived.  Ambika gives birth to Dhritarashtra, played by Thakur Anoop Singh and Ambalika gives birth to Pandu, Played by Arun Singh Rana.


25 years later, Dhirthrashtra marries Gandhari, played by Riya Deepsi who is the princess of the Gandhara Kingdom. Pandu marries Kunti, played by Shafaq Naaz who is the princess of Kunti Kingdom. 


Fast forward 27 years and the Kurukshetra War between the Pandavas and the Kauravas commences after the Pandavas' peace treaty with the Kauravas failed to materialize. The war lasts for 18 days and both sides face huge losses, with their children and their allies being a part of the long list of casualties. The war ended when Duryodhana, the only remaining Kaurava, was killed by Bhima. The show ends with Yudhishthira being finally crowned by Krishna, as the king of Hastinapur.


The show won the Star Guild Award for the best Mythological serial and the Indian Television Academy Awards for the best Historical/Mythological serial.
