The romantic comedy Luka Chuppi was developed by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films and directed by Laxman Utekar in 2019. The story, which is set in Mathura, is about a tv presenter who fornicates with his independent intern. When their family members presume they are married to one other, turmoil results. Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon play key roles, and supporting cast members include Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi, Vinay Pathak, Arun Kushwah, and Alka Amin.
Living together is considered a dishonour to the orthodox Indian culture, according to Vishnu Trivedi, a losing politician in the tiny town of Mathura. Around the same time, his party starts to spearhead a full-scale campaign against movie star Nazeem Khan, who is purportedly living with his partner, which is precisely the reason for his animosity for live-in relationships.
Rashmi, the daughter of Vishnu, accepts an internship at a regional news organisation and begins working with Vinod "Guddu" Shukla, the channel's top reporter, and cameraman Abbas Sheikh, who is Shukla's best friend. Guddu proposes to Rashmi after they fell in love. She recommends a live-in relationship because she isn't ready for marriage; he objects because he is more conservative and intimidated by Vishnu. Abbas offers a live-in arrangement as a temporary solution for the duration of their 20-day work trip to Gwalior. The pair agree.
They pose as a married couple in order to rent a flat in a conservative neighbourhood. They eventually become closer and engage in multiple acts of intimacy. Mrs. Srivastava, their nosy next-door neighbour, witnesses them engaging in such behaviour and questions their marital status. When queried about their wedding date, they give conflicting responses, which makes matters worse. She has plans to organise the neighbourhood the following morning to kick out the newlyweds, but Guddu and Rashmi come up with false wedding photos and keepsakes the previous night, derailing her plans. After twenty days, he declares his love once more, and she agrees to his marriage proposal. Prior to their departure from Gwalior, Guddu's relative Babulal notices the two of them together, follows them, looks at their wedding photos, and concludes that they eloped.
The following morning, Guddu's entire family is summoned to their home by Babulal, and they reprimand him for getting hitched. Guddu and Rashmi refuse to acknowledge the facts after learning that the relatives would happily welcome a wedding but not cohabitation. They all return to Mathura to meet Rashmi's family and inform them of what happened. However, Vishnu is pleased to learn that his daughter chose to get married rather than cohabit. He goes so far as to describe the fatal results if they had cohabited. The pair hides the facts out of fear.
Despite the fact that they initially behave as a married couple, they dislike the fact that they are not officially wed. They repeatedly try to get hitched in private but are always interrupted; as a last resort, they try to wed in a public ceremony. But as Vishnu is the principal guest, he busts them in the act. Angered, they finally confess to cohabiting. Once his family catches up, Guddu tells Vishnu that the main cause of his electoral defeat was his resistance to change; as the young generation makes up the majority of voters and is committed to modernity, rejecting the youth's tactics would result in a lack of backing from them. Guddu and Rashmi finally marry after persuading Vishnu to stop opposing cohabiting couples.
Luka Chuppi was a critical and commercial success, earning close to INR 130 crores in the process. It was praised for normalising a taboo subject and for showing the heartland of India as it is, without including any stereotypical characters.
