In 2004, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani released the coming-of-age war drama Lakshya  in the Hindi language. With Boman Irani, Rajiv Kumar and Anjula Bedi playing supporting roles, it has Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, and Amitabh Bachchan in the key roles. The movie, which is based on the 1999 Kargil War, tells the story of Karan Sheirgill, an unmotivated and slothful Delhi resident who enlists in the Indian Army and assumes the identity of a soldier in an effort to impress his girlfriend Romila Dutta.

After taking the Combined Defence Services Examination, Karan is accepted into the Dehradun-based Indian Military Academy. He lacks discipline and is unaccustomed to life there, nevertheless. As a result of his arrogance and sloth, the team keeps punishing him during his military training. He leaves the academy upset and is forced to deal with his parents' negative views of him. In addition, Romi breaks up with him angry because he disregarded his own decision. Devastated, Karan finally accepts his predicament and takes a choice. He goes back to the Indian Military Academy, accepts his penalty, and develops into an officer cadet who is focused and disciplined.

One year later, his mother congratulates him on being commissioned as a lieutenant in the Indian Army. The 3rd battalion of the Punjab Regiment, led by Colonel Sunil Damle, is where Karan is assigned. The battalion is located in Ladakh's Kargil. After taking a leave of absence, Karan travels to Delhi and is devastated to learn that Romi is engaged to her coworker Rajeev Goel. He also meets his parents, but because of the commencement of hostilities in Kargil, his leave is ended prematurely and he is sent back to his regiment. When he returns to his battalion, he is elevated to the position of acting Captain.

The officers are briefed by Colonel Damle on the most recent developments, and he tells that some enemies have crossed the Line of Control (LoC) from Pakistan and are now occupying a number of mountain peaks on the Indian side of the border. The battalion's task is to protect Position 5179, a strategic vantage point dominating National Highway 1D, the army's major supply route. The mountain's southern side has 3 km of open ground with no cover, while the western and western-facing sides both have a 1,000-foot steep rock face. The mountain's northern side is on the Pakistani side of the LoC.

The battalion makes the decision to strike from the mountain's eastern flank. The assault's initial phase is successful. The enemy's screening forces are destroyed by the battalion, and Karan is recognised for his gallantry in preserving the life of another officer. As a war correspondent, Romi is stationed in Kargil in the meantime. When Romi visits Kargil, she encounters a transformed Karan and starts to fall in love with him once more in the thick of the conflict. Karan is still convinced that she is engaged, therefore he is hesitant to reciprocate his feelings.

The battalion tackles the mountain's peak during the second phase of the assault but is unable to take it since the Pakistanis have a tactical advantage and heavy artillery. The unit sustains significant losses. Colonel Damle is summoned by Brigadier Puri, who gives him 48 hours to seize the peak because another battalion would be in charge of Point 5179 after that. Then Colonel Damle gives the order to Karan and a squad of 12 soldiers and officers to scale the 1,000-foot rock wall on the mountain's western side and edge the enemy stronghold. On the eastern side, they will receive artillery support. Karan understands that by successfully climbing the top, he has at long last attained his objective.

The team's communicators are also destroyed, making it impossible for them to contact battalion headquarters. Only 6 of the original 12 are still around. They decide to carry out the mission as planned. They successfully mount the cliff, and at night they attack the Pakistani position. Even though Karan is hurt and the team loses three more members, their attack is successful. The following morning, Karan hobbles to the peak and hoists the Indian flag before firing a flare to let Colonel Damle and Subedar Major Pritam Singh know they had taken control of the peak. Days later, Karan is seen reconnecting with his parents after being released from a military hospital. Romi asks him what his next goal is after achieving his first one. "You," Karan responds, and they embrace one another.

Even though Lakshya  did not fare well at the box office, its continuous reruns on television made people realise the excellence of the movie which earned Hrithik a Filmfare Award for Best Actor. It has become a cult classic over the years and is considered to be Hrithik Roshan's best performance to date.
