Ekta and Shobha Kapoor founded and co-produced the Indian soap opera Kanyadaan under the Balaji Telefilms brand. The show had its Sony Entertainment Television debut in 1999.It stars Kirron Kher, Jayati Bhatia, Poonam Narula, Hussain Kuwajerwala, and Sudhanshu Pandey.

The connection between a mother, played by Kher, and her two daughters—one legitimate (Bhatia) and the other illegitimate—is the focus of the television show (Narula). The television show examines how an Indian family gives their daughters to live with their in-laws.

The mother and her young daughter, who is of marriageable age, are living a happy and comfortable life. After her first romance ends in failure, the daughter finally meets the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with and is ready to become engaged. Sakshi, her mother's illegitimate daughter, enters their life at this point. The plot follows the development of the bonds between the mother and her daughters, as well as those between the foster sisters, from that point on. The ramifications of a man's inability to accept a daughter from his wife's previous marriage are the subject of this narrative.
