Sujoy Ghosh co-wrote, co-produced, and directed the 2012 Indian thriller Kahaani. With the help of Inspector General A. Khan, portrayed by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Assist Sub-Inspector Satyoki "Rana" Sinha, played by Parambatra Chatterjee, Vidya Balan plays Vidya Bagchi, a pregnant lady looking for her estranged husband in Kolkata during the Durga Puja season. Important parts are also played by Indraneil Sengupta, Saswata Chatterjee, Pamela Bhuttoria, and Darshan Jariwala.
The occupants on board a Kolkata Metro Rail compartment are killed by a poison-gas attack. Two years later, during the Durga Puja celebrations, Vidya Bagchi, an expecting British-Indian software engineer, travels from London to Kolkata in an effort to locate her missing husband, Arnab Bagchi. Satyaki "Rana" Sinha, a police officer, offers to assist. Despite Vidya's assertion that Arnab travelled to Kolkata on business for the National Data Center (NDC), preliminary research indicates that no such person worked for the NDC.
Human resources director for the NDC Agnes D'Mello tells Vidya that her husband reminded her of former colleague Milan Damji, whose file is undoubtedly maintained in the previous NDC office. Agnes is assassinated by Bob Biswas, an assassin posing as a life insurance agent before she can offer any further assistance. In front of her home, where Agnes is seen listening to music, she is shot. Breaking into the NDC office, Vidya and Rana discover Damji's file while narrowly avoiding a run-in with Bob who is looking for the same information.
Meanwhile, the chief of the Intelligence Bureau in Delhi, Bhaskaran K., and his deputy, Khan, have become aware of retrieving Damji's documents. When Khan gets to Kolkata, he says Damji was a renegade IB agent who carried out the poison-gas attack. Vidya keeps looking despite Khan's warnings because she thinks Arnab may have gotten into problems because of his likeness to Damji.
The address listed on Damji's file directs Vidya and Rana to a run-down apartment. R. Sridhar, an NDC official, is recognised by an errand boy from the nearby tea shop as a regular visitor to Damji's apartment. After failing in his effort to assassinate Vidya, Bob is then hit by a truck while being pursued. Vidya and Rana discover an IP address transmitting orders to shoot her after looking through Bob's cell phone. To check Sridhar's IP address, they break into his workplace, but he gets warned electronically and goes back to work. During a fight, Vidya accidentally murders Sridhar, which enrages Khan because he wanted him to survive.
The phone number of Bhaskaran can be found by deciphering a code that is revealed in Sridhar's computer data. Vidya phones Bhaskaran to let him know that she has taken important papers out of Sridhar's office. She offers Bhaskaran the paperwork in exchange for his assistance in locating her husband, but Bhaskaran advises her to speak with the local police instead. Soon after, Vidya receives a call from an unidentified number telling her that if she wants to see her spouse alive, she must give the caller the paperwork. Khan believes Damji is the caller.
Rana and Khan travel to meet Damji after Vidya. When Vidya expresses her concern that he'll be able to give her husband back in return for the confidential material, Damji ends the meeting and tries to depart. When Vidya tries to stop him, Damji pulls a revolver on her during the battle. By disarming him with the false maternity belly she has been employing, Vidya then stabs him in the throat with a hair stick before executing him with his own revolver. Before the police come, she runs away into the crowd, leaving behind a thank-you note for Rana and a pen drive holding information from Sridhar's computer. This results in Bhaskaran's arrest. In her analysis, Rana comes to the conclusion that neither Vidya nor Arnab Bagchi actually exists, and that Vidya had been exploiting the IB and the police for her own purposes.
It is revealed that Vidya is the widower of Arup Basu, an IB employee and Damji's colleague who died in the poison-gas attack and whose death also caused Vidya to instantly pass out upon witnessing her husband's body and experience a miscarriage. Vidya was assisted in her quest to exact revenge on him and their unborn child by former IB official Pratap Bajpayee, who believed a senior IB official was involved.
The film was a box office hit, earning 104 crores rupees on a budget of 8 crores. It was praised for its excellent screenplay and direction, along with Vidya Balan's acting. Special praise was showered upon Saswata Chatterjee, who played the role of Bob Biswas for executing his role to utmost perfection. His character got so popular that there was a spinoff movie for his character titled Bob Biswas.
