Single mother and well-known criminal defence attorney Anuradha Verma (Aishwarya Rai) has never lost a case. Her daughter Sanaya (Sara Arjun) is taken hostage on the day of a parent-child race that has been planned at her school. Anuradha receives a call from the abductor, who demands that she defend a convicted felon in order to get her daughter back. Sanaya is secure at her grandmother's house, Anuradha lies to her relatives and friends, keeping the police out of the situation. The case against Niyaaz Shaikh (Chandan Roy Sanyal), who was convicted of raping and killing a young woman named Sia (Priya Banerjee), would be decided in four days.
Anuradha is continuously monitored by the kidnapper to make sure she follows with all instructions. Anuradha must work hard to prove Niyaaz is the murderer, and as time is running out, she tries to enlist the assistance of her police friend Yohan (Irrfan Khan), who has been expelled from the force by other corrupt officers for repeatedly breaking the law.
Powerful politician Mahesh Maklai is carefully following the Niyaaz issue (Jackie Shroff). Mahesh requests that a known public prosecutor (Atul Kulkarni), who Anuradha had previously defeated, take on the case because rape is a serious problem that the current administration is battling.
Anuradha attempts to learn as much as she can, even if it means lying to Sia's mother Garima Chaudhary (Shabana Azmi). Sam (Siddhanth Kapoor), Mahesh's son, was Sia's boyfriend, and Niyaaz was their heroin dealer, Anuradha learns. Sam was drunk and unconscious when Niyaaz delivered drugs to Sia's house, at which point he raped and killed Sia.
One evening, when Anuradha is returning home, Mahesh Maklai and his goons kidnap her. The politician tells her that Sam called him in a state of panic to ask for assistance in getting rid of Sia's body. Anuradha is left bound and gagged on the floor by the home invaders, who have cut the gas pipes and are preparing to burn the house on fire. She manages to free herself, nevertheless, and flee.
When the case is brought up again, Anuradha is able to free Niyaaz on bail owing to a lack of evidence and accuses Mahesh and Sam of being complicit in the murder, ending Mahesh's political career. Sanaya's captor releases her. Yohan and Anuradha discover that Garima is responsible for the kidnapping of her daughter when they conduct further investigation. Anuradha was coerced by Garima to stand up for Niyaaz so that he may be let free. Then, Garima abducted Niyaaz and burned him alive because she believes that either the death penalty or life in prison would be insufficient punishment for the terrible rape and murder of her daughter. Anuradha provides Garima her legal services once she is detained by police, despite her initial rage upon learning the truth.
